Baby and Toddler Safer Sleeping Guide
Creating a Safe Sleep Environment for Babies and Toddlers.
At my setting, the safety and wellbeing of every baby/toddler is my highest priority. I follow current safe sleep guidance to help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and ensure both babies and toddlers sleep as safely as possible while in my care.
Always Place Babies on Their Back
* Babies and toddlers are always placed on their back for every sleep, including naps.
* Once a baby can roll independently, they will be allowed to find their own sleeping position, but they will always be placed on their back to begin with.
Use a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface
* Babies and toddlers sleep on a firm, flat mattress that fits the cot or travel cot correctly.
* Mattresses are clean, waterproof where appropriate, and in good condition.
Keep the Cot Clear
The sleep space should be free from:
* Pillows
* Duvets or quilts
* Cushions
* Cot bumpers
* Soft toys
* Loose blankets
* Comforters (unless specifically agreed with parents and age appropriate)
Appropriate Bedding
* Babies and toddlers should be dressed in suitable sleepwear for the room temperature.
* If blankets are used, they should be lightweight, tucked in securely, and positioned no higher than the babyโs shoulders.
* Sleep bags may be used if provided by parents and are the correct size for the baby.
Maintain a Comfortable Temperature
* The sleeping room should be kept at a comfortable temperature, ideally between 16ยฐC and 20ยฐC.
* Babies are checked regularly to ensure they are not too hot or too cold.
Regular Sleep Checks
While sleeping, babies/toddlers are checked regularly to monitor:
* Breathing
* Skin colour
* Body temperature
* Sleeping position
* Overall wellbeing
All sleep checks are recorded in accordance with the settingโs procedures.
Follow Individual Sleep Routines
I work closely with parents and carers to follow each babyโs usual sleep routine wherever possible while ensuring safe sleep practices are always maintained.
Communication with Parents
Parents are encouraged to:
* Share their babyโs usual sleep routine.
* Inform us of any changes to sleeping patterns.
* Discuss any medical advice relating to their babyโs sleep.
Working Together
By following recognised safer sleeping practices and working in partnership with parents and carers, I aim to provide a safe, comfortable and nurturing sleep environment for every baby/toddler in my care.
