🌞🌕SOLAR ECLIPSE🌕🌞

What Happens to Nature? A solar eclipse affects more than just light! As the Moon covers the Sun, the dim, silvery light confuses wildlife, birds often get quiet and head to roost early thinking night is falling, while nocturnal creatures might start waking up!

Try to listen and observe carefully, while the eclipse is happening, to see if you can spot any changes in the behaviours of wildlife around you.

Remember, although we won't see a total eclipse here in the UK, the sun will still be over 90% covered and the sky will visibly darken! First contact happens around 6pm and will reach maximum coverage by around 7pm.

The Colander Trick & Shadow Magic

No eclipse glasses? (We're all out at HQ!) Grab a kitchen colander! Hold it up during the eclipse and let the sunlight filter through the holes onto a sheet of white paper or the ground. Each hole acts as a pinhole projector, casting dozens of tiny crescent-shaped suns! You can get the exact same effect by looking at the dappled shadows beneath leafy trees.

Any object with tiny holes will work! Check out this image using a mini cheddar as a solar eclipse pin hole projector! 🤣🧀🍪

🌞🌕🕶️SOLAR ECLIPSE 2026! 🕶️🌕🌞

The Basics & The Magic:

Get ready for a spectacular cosmic show on Wednesday, 12th August! From the UK, we’ll see a dramatic partial solar eclipse, with over 90% of the Sun covered in places. In Edinburgh, first contact begins at 6:08 PM, reaches its maximum at 7:05 PM, and finishes at 8:00 PM.

Remember, safety first: never look directly at the Sun—always use certified eclipse glasses!

Steve and James had a great evening yesterday running a session for Care 4 Carers in preparation for the solar eclipse next Wednesday!

We handed out a number of eclipse glasses thanks to Go Stargazing.

Everyone enjoyed learning all about the moon! Past, present and future! Making moon craters was messy but lots of fun! 🌔☄️

The epic breakfast roll was worth the trip alone! 😂🤩😋
