New £55m landmark building at Kingston University's Penrhyn Road campus gets go ahead 21/08/2015

£55m new building gets the go-ahead at Kingston University, giving a boost to student and public-facing facilities at the Penrhyn Road campus and since the Students' Union (KUSU) has already moved out of the building that the new build will replace it won't be majorly disruptive when construction starts next summer.

Kingston's University-wide maths support centre "MathsAid" is run by us and next year (2015/16) our funding's been increased so we can pay more great people, students and staff, to support maths across the university :-)

There's some information about support (maths included) at http://www.kingston.ac.uk/gettingready/getting-ready-to-study/study-resources/ but you can also ask about support when you speak to an academic on the clearing lines: 0844 842 9599, or +44 (0)20 8328 1149 from outside the UK.

Maths and Life Sciences at Kingston University teamed-up to use "clickers" in all 1st year modules in 2014/15 -- it turned-out to be such a good project that the University is rolling them out to all 1st year students in 2015 :-) If you'd like to join us on a maths, stats, actuarial or financial maths course give us a call on the clearing hotline on 0844 842 9599 (UK callers) or +44 20 8328 1149 (callers outside the UK) -- see http://www.kingston.ac.uk/courses/find-a-course/undergraduate/subject-areas/627-mathematics-and-statistics/ for more details.

Results from the National Student Survey are out today (http://unistats.direct.gov.uk/ updates in September) and Kingston's results continue to improve, with average satisfaction levels rising across the university as a whole. In Mathematics over 90% of respondents agreed it was easy to contact a member of staff and more than 80% found our courses stimulating and that staff were good at explaining things ... of course we're aiming for 100% but as mathematicians and statisticians we all appreciate how the data fluctuate ;-)

Dr. Nigel Ling: Hierarchical regression model tests

Abstract:
Several disciplines study situations in which experiments are naturally organised in a hierarchy. In zoology, subjects are necessarily confined to enclosures – rats in a cage, fish in a pond, etc. Similarly studies of children in schools, or patients in hospital, for example, will often fall into groupings based on location, teacher, doctor, or some other attribute. Hierarchical analysis of variance can be used to study dependent variables at the conclusion of an experiment, but for those designs that wish to compare a relationship with some quantitative independent variable – changes over time for instance – there is no test for dependence. Usually the group values of the dependent variable are tested for observations made at the conclusion of the experiment, a procedure that not only discards information but may also lead to a false result. This work develops a formula for F with which to test the difference between slopes in a hierarchical regression.
