Theory: Radioactivity
Radioactivity is the spontaneous disintegration of unstable atomic nuclei with the emission of energetic particles or electromagnetic radiation. Marie Curie made pioneering contributions to the study of radioactivity and discovered the radioactive elements polonium (Po) and radium (Ra) in 1898. Radioactive emissions are mainly of three types: alpha (ฮฑ), beta (ฮฒ), and gamma (ฮณ) radiation. Alpha particles are helium nuclei, beta particles are high-speed electrons, and gamma rays are high-energy electromagnetic waves. Radioactivity is an atomic or nuclear property, not a chemical property. Its applications include cancer treatment, medical imaging, scientific research, and various nuclear technologies.
