Many of you remember Wilf Watton who taught you Physics at the School and his affectionate nickname of 'Cod'.

Did you know that we have a science lab named after him known as WWL (The Wilf Watton Lab). This was renovated and renamed in recent years thanks to a generous donation from former student, Adrian Beecroft who has fond memories of his former Physics teacher and his own love of Physics that came from him.

**Calling all OH medics**

Our Autumn term Medic Society is back in full swing and we would love to hear from those that took a medic pathway after Hymers Sixth Form . The students meet on a Tuesday lunch time and our guests can be in person or virtual. If you can spare 30 minutes, please reach out they would be most grateful to hear from you and where your medical career has taken you.

We talk a lot about the strength of our alumni community, but seeing our Old Hymerians in action is something else entirely. We were incredibly lucky last night to have alumni who gave back so generously and shared their real-world experience, guide, and inspire our next generation of medics. Thank you to Amit Chawla and Ben Mays who kindly gave up their Wednesday evening to come back to school and speak to our students about their career path since leaving our Sixth Form. Entering the medical field is a monumental journey, and having trusted mentors to share their journey makes a difference to our students and families, especially from those who have already walked the same corridors before them.

You aren't just giving advice; you’re directly shaping the next generation of Hymers medic too! Thank you to every one in our Hymers community who has volunteered their time, insight, and encouragement to all of our students so far this year.

Throwback Thursday to April 1978!

As our Year 5 students head off on their 3 day trip to PGL this morning , we have found details of a trip Junior School students in 1978 undertook, exploring some of the North of England’s most historic sites. The itinerary included visits to the Roman Wall and fort at Chesters, the temple of Mithras and Roman remains at Housesteads, York and Aldborough, Durham Cathedral and Castle, Bede College, Beamish Open Air Museum, Richmond Castle, and Fountains Abbey.

Along the way, pupils learned about Roman Britain, Anglo-Saxon history, medieval castles, monastic life, and the industrial heritage of the North East, while enjoying walks, games, and evenings at their accommodation in Durham.

A wonderful glimpse into school life nearly 50 years ago and a reminder that educational trips have long been a valued part of the Hymers experience.

We are looking for members of our wonderful alumni and parent community to lend a helping hand to our aspiring medics as they prepare for their upcoming university Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). Mock interview practice makes a world of difference for students stepping into high-stakes university admissions. By acting as an interviewer, sharing your professional insights, or offering constructive feedback, you can give our students the confidence and preparation they need to shine.

This event will take place at the school on Thursday 19th November at 5:30 pm. Whether you are a practicing healthcare professional, a current medical student, or simply experienced in medical structured interviewing, your time, expertise, and guidance will directly shape the journey of our next generation of medics.
