Does getting in touch about dyslexia automatically mean an assessment is the next step?

No.

Before an assessment is arranged, we take time to understand what's been happening.

You'll be asked to provide background information so we can build a picture of your child's development, education and the difficulties you're currently seeing.

We look carefully at this information before deciding whether a full diagnostic assessment is appropriate.

Sometimes, we may feel that another professional or a different type of support would be a more suitable next step.

And if that's the case, we'll tell you.

The aim isn't simply to carry out an assessment.

It's to help you understand what's going on and make sure you're taking the right next step for your child.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Did you know this happens before a dyslexia assessment is booked?

Let us know below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

One of the questions we're asked most often is:

"What actually happens during a dyslexia assessment?"

For a child who's never had one before, the word assessment can sound a little daunting. Parents often aren't quite sure what their child will be expected to do either.

So we've put together a little look at what you can expect. ๐Ÿ‘†

An assessment isn't about passing or failing.

It's an opportunity for us to explore different areas of learning and begin to understand your child's individual pattern of strengths and difficulties.

And importantly, we work around the child.

There are breaks, they can move around, use a fidget, have a snack and take the time they need.

Is there something about dyslexia assessments you've always wondered about?

Pop your question in the comments. It might just become our next Liz Explains post.

Every child sees the world a little differently.

Some children quietly hide how hard they're finding things.

Some work twice as hard just to keep up.

Some begin to believe they're simply "not good enough."

As parents, watching that happen can be heartbreaking.

At Hull Dyslexia, we believe every child deserves to be understood.

Not judged.

Not compared.

Understood.

One parent recently shared words that perfectly capture why we do what we do.

That sentence says everything.

When parents understand how their child learns, everything starts to make more sense.

Confidence grows.

Support becomes clearer.

Children begin to realise there isn't anything "wrong" with them.

They simply learn differently.

If you're looking for answers, we're here whenever you're ready to start that conversation.

Many parents think a dyslexia assessment ends with a report.

The truth is...

That's where the next chapter begins.

Parents often tell us they aren't just looking for a diagnosis.

They're looking for understanding.

They want to know why their child is struggling.

They want practical advice.

They want to know how they can help.

One parent recently told us:

That's exactly why every report is written with such care.

Not simply to explain what we've found.

But to help families, schools and children move forward with confidence.

When everyone understands how a child learns best, they can receive the support they deserve.

Because a report isn't the end of the journey.

It's the beginning of understanding.

Have you ever found yourself wondering...

"Have I missed something?"

For many parents, it's a question that quietly sits in the back of their mind for months, sometimes even years.

You notice your child working harder than everyone else.

Homework takes longer.

Confidence starts to fade.

You begin searching for answers, but you're also carrying your own worries.

Will they feel nervous?

Will they enjoy the assessment?

Will they feel like they're being tested?

If that's how you're feeling, you're not alone.

At Hull Dyslexia, we know an assessment is about so much more than test scores.

It's about people.

It's about emotions.

It's about helping children feel comfortable enough to be themselves and giving parents the reassurance they've often been searching for.

One parent recently told us:

Those words mean so much because they remind us that we aren't just supporting children.

We're supporting parents too.

Every family arrives with their own questions, concerns and hopes for the future.

Our role is to listen, understand and help you move forward with confidence.

Because every child deserves to be understood.

And every parent deserves to feel supported.

If you've been wondering whether an assessment is the right next step, we're always happy to answer your questions before you make any decisions.

Your child can hear words perfectly.

Their hearing is fine.

Yet reading and spelling still feel incredibly difficult.

This is where phonological awareness comes in.

Phonological awareness is our ability to recognise, identify and work with sounds in words.

It helps us:

Hear rhymes.

Break words into sounds.

Blend sounds together.

Identify beginning, middle and ending sounds.

Connect sounds to letters.

For many dyslexic learners, this area can be particularly challenging.

It's one of the reasons reading and spelling can feel much harder than they appear from the outside.

What many people don't realise is that these difficulties happen despite effort.

Despite practice.

Despite intelligence.

Understanding why something is difficult is often the first step towards helping.

If your child struggles with reading and spelling despite trying their best, follow Hull Dyslexia for more support and information.

Many parents are surprised to learn that a dyslexia assessment isn't simply a reading test.

It's much more detailed than that.

When a child comes for an assessment, we're looking at a range of different areas that help build a picture of how they learn.

Memory.

Processing speed.

Reading.

Spelling.

Phonological awareness.

Comprehension.

Writing skills.

Attainment.

Every child has strengths.

Every child has challenges.

The aim isn't to look for what's wrong.

The aim is to understand how that individual child learns best.

Because when we understand the reason behind a struggle, we can start identifying the right support.

For many families, understanding brings relief.

Finally having answers can remove months, or even years, of uncertainty.

Follow Hull Dyslexia to learn more about how dyslexia assessments help build understanding and confidence.

Your child knows the answer.

You know they know the answer.

But by the time they've worked it out, somebody else has already put their hand up.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Over time, that can have a huge impact on confidence.

Processing speed is the speed at which our brain takes in information, understands it and responds.

It's not a measure of intelligence.

It's not a measure of capability.

Think of it like different cars.

Some accelerate quickly.

Some take a little longer to get going.

Both still reach their destination.

Some children simply need more time to process information and organise their thoughts.

That extra time can make a huge difference in the classroom, during homework and in exams.

If your child often says "I know it but I can't get it out quickly enough", you're not alone.

Follow Hull Dyslexia for more information about the hidden challenges many dyslexic learners experience every day.

Itโ€™s hard watching your child struggle.

Especially when you know how much theyโ€™re trying.

You see it at home.
The effort.
The frustration.
The moments where they just give up.

Steve Redgrave had dyslexia.

At school, he struggled with reading and writing.
He felt different.

But his story didnโ€™t end there.

Because success isnโ€™t one path.

And your childโ€™s future isnโ€™t decided by how theyโ€™re doing right now.

What does make the difference

Understanding them early
Supporting them properly
Building their confidence back up

If youโ€™re worried, trust that feeling.

Youโ€™ve probably heard it before.

โ€œThey just need to focus moreโ€
โ€œTheyโ€™ll catch upโ€
โ€œThey need to try harderโ€

And part of you wants to believe that.

But another part of you is thinking

โ€œWhat if thereโ€™s something more?โ€

Jamie Oliver has dyslexia.

School didnโ€™t come easy.

Reading and writing were difficult.
He didnโ€™t fit the traditional system.

But hereโ€™s the truth.

Success doesnโ€™t come from fitting into one way of learning.

It comes from understanding your way of learning.

Right now, your child might not feel โ€œgood at schoolโ€.

But that doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™re not capable.

It might just mean they havenโ€™t been understood yet.

You donโ€™t need to wait for things to get worse.

If something doesnโ€™t feel right, trust that.
