β€œFree Mobile Phones, iPads, Driving Lessons…” and Other Lies You’ve Heard About Asylum Seekers

We’ve all seen or heard the claims. Here are the most common myths vs facts

❌ Myth: Asylum seekers are given free mobile phones, iPads, laptops.
βœ”οΈ Fact: No, they receive only essentials: basic housing (which they cannot choose) and around Β£6.43 per day for food, clothing, and toiletries.

❌ Myth: They get free driving lessons and cars.
βœ”οΈ Fact: False, asylum seekers are not allowed to drive or take driving lessons while their case is pending.

❌ Myth: They get free luxury housing.
βœ”οΈ Fact: Most are placed in temporary, often cramped accommodation such as hotels or hostels, sometimes for months or years. They have no say in where they live.

❌ Myth: They get free dental care, private healthcare, or fast-tracked NHS treatment.
βœ”οΈ Fact: Asylum seekers can access the NHS like anyone else living in the UK, but face the same waiting lists and challenges, there is no special treatment.

❌ Myth: They get free university education.
βœ”οΈ Fact: Asylum seekers are not eligible for student loans and face significant barriers to higher education. Only those granted refugee status can access student finance.

❌ Myth: They get free cash handouts or huge benefits.
βœ”οΈ Fact: They cannot claim mainstream benefits such as Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. The small asylum allowance is far below the poverty line.

❌ Myth: They jump the queue for social housing.
βœ”οΈ Fact: Asylum seekers have no right to council housing. Only once granted refugee status do they join the same waiting lists as everyone else.

These falsehoods aren’t harmless, they fuel division and hate. The truth is, asylum seekers come here for safety, not luxury. At CIAC, we believe in standing firmly for truth, compassion, and justice. Everything we do is grounded in evidence, guided by the law, and informed by the lived experiences of the people we serve. In a time when misinformation spreads so easily, our commitment is to challenge falsehoods, share reliable knowledge, and ensure that the voices too often ignored are heard and valued.

*We know some will claim this is untrue, but every fact here comes from refugee agencies, parliamentary briefings and official/direct guidance. These are 100% official, verifiable sources, not hearsay, headlines or rumour.
