We want to say a massive thank you to Craig Poulton from Wienerberger for dropping by on Thursday! Craig hand-delivered beautiful glazed bricks, each individually named for our staff members. Our main walls might be standard Wienerberger brick, but these special glazed ones are a brilliant reminder of the unique bond that connects us all! Wienerberger does so much for the trade every single year, donating bricks to colleges, training centres, the Guild of Bricklayers gold trowel competitions, and all the Supertrowel events. We genuinely can't thank them enough for supporting construction education.Mind you, we have a small confession to make... We accidentally missed our Joinery Coach, Steve Cross, off the staff list we sent over! Don't worry Steve, you aren't getting left out of the wall that easily—we're on the case to get your personalized brick sorted!Cheers to Craig and the Wienerberger team for always backing what we do!

Looking to take on a construction apprentice?

This Monday, a brand new group of pre-apprenticeship students is starting their journey with us at OTE Construction Training!

These young adults are working hard to build a career in the trade. They'll be mastering employability skills, diving into site Health & Safety, and gaining practical multi-trade construction skills.
A number of them will also be heading out for real site experience

What a week!
Our apprentices have been working incredibly hard across all departments and the standard of work has been fantastic to see.

A huge shoutout and thank you to Olivia Hatfield from Polypipe! They have kindly donated all-new polypipe drainage to our groundworks department. Donations like this mean the world to us—it means our students are training on the absolute best products on the market today.

Here is what our brilliant learners have been up to:
Plastering: Taking on a massive range of tasks, from traditional lime renders to silicone render.
Bricklaying: We are so proud of one of our new apprentice bricklayers who first joined us through our pre-16 provision. They absolutely smashed it this week, building some amazing Level 3 models!

As for me, Friday was a busy one! I started the day in my work gear mixing up all the mortar for the bricklaying apprentices, and finished it in a suit heading over to the Leeds Armouries for the LCB launch of the Yorkshire and Humber CTEC.

A huge well done to everyone this week. Have a great weekend!

Great day in Leeds yesterday!
We attended the official launch of the regional Construction Technical Excellence College (CTEC) delivery plan for Yorkshire and the Humber.

A huge thank you to Carley Sidebottom, Robert Holmes, and Nikki Davis for hosting a brilliant event at the Royal Armouries Museum, alongside Leeds College of Building. It was fantastic to connect with over 180 training providers, local authorities, manufacturers, and employers from all across the region.

With so many young people currently looking for the right path into education or work, CTECs are going to play a massive role in building their future. By working together, we are:
Connecting local students directly with real employers.
Creating clear pathways from the classroom straight into rewarding careers.
Teaching the future-proof skills our industry needs, like green energy, retrofitting, and digital construction.

The built environment offers incredible, secure careers for the next generation. Yesterday was a huge step forward, and we can’t wait to see the amazing collaborations that come out of it!

Wow, what a difference two weeks makes!
Our main reception area and the CEO’s office have been totally transformed from old, worn-out spaces to looking absolutely amazing.We’ve been two key team members down due to holidays and illness, but our bricklaying Occupational Development Coach, Wayne Proctor, and Kev Davison absolutely smashed it to get the brickwork done! Wayne built a beautiful curved front reception desk and even cut the bricks to inlay "OTE" to make it stand out. If you spot any holes in the brickwork, don't worry—they are there for a reason! They are for personalized staff named bricks that our friend Craig Poulton at Wienerberger is making for us, which should be delivered soon!There are just a few bits of pointing and cleaning left to do, so it is now time for our Joinery Occupational Development Coach to put in the new ceilings and panelled walls. After that, our Plastering Occupational Development Coach will be stepping in to do his bit!
Huge thanks to Wayne and Kev, for all their hard work so far.
We can't wait to show you the final results! Watch this space!

What a week!
Talk about earning the bank holiday weekend...We kicked off a massive layout change last Friday, knocking out the MD’s office, receptionist’s office, and the main reception area. Things threw us for a loop this week with a late cement delivery and our technician off poorly, meaning we had to do all our own heavy mixing and loading out.It was a lot of stop-and-start, but we pushed through!
The new curved reception wall is nearly finished, the decorative panel is in the process of been cut, and we’ve started taking out the bricks behind the desk in the new brick wall where our staff named bricks will go when they get delivered. There is still a mountain of brickwork left before the new panel walls and ceilings go in, but we are so proud of the progress.

Talk about a fast-moving project!

Two weeks ago today, I was chatting with Ben Mills MD at OTE Construction Training about the glazed plaque I got for judging this year’s Super Trowel final. For the 13 years I've worked with Ben, he's always mentioned wanting a "Staff Wall" with everyone's names built into it. That got my brain working overtime!

I got in touch with Craig Poulton at Wienerberger, who brilliant agreed to help us make the custom bricks to our design. After plenty of emails back and forth fixing some pixelated formats and double-checking everyone's spelling, they are now officially being made!

That first Friday got me trying something new. Usually, I’d sketch designs by hand, but I decided to try it on the computer. I started with a straight wall and a serving hatch and sent it to the leadership team. A meeting later, we decided this was our chance to completely transform our reception area for years to come.

It took 4 or 5 attempts on the computer, and a lot of sticking tape to the floor to see what it would look like, but we finally got a design everyone loved.

We’ve been flat out setting up our new Smart Assessor system this week, and I was panicking that we'd run out of time before the next apprentice block release and pre-apprenticeships start. But we had another meeting yesterday afternoon and got the official green light to go for it!

Arrived at work first thing this morning and did a quick "before" video of the tired old reception and offices. By 8 AM, we were stuck in—ripping out radiators, old pipework, and clearing the walls. Our MD Ben needed to keep working, so he stayed right at his desk through all the dust and noise while we knocked down the two stud walls around him! Talk about focus!

Once the walls were down and flooring was up, we marked it out and dry-bonded the brickwork. We realized it needed a bit more space, so Wayne and I moved the wall back 450mm, reset the trammel, and dry-bonded it again. Perfect fit.

An absolutely brilliant first day. Massive thanks to the ODCs and my sparky mate Darren Palmer (Palm Electric) for dropping everything to help us out today.

This week at OTE, our first-year bricklaying apprentices are learning to conquer the heights! Working high up is a massive part of being a successful builder. But did you know many people never test if they are afraid of heights before starting their construction career?We are changing the game. Before any of our students head out to a real site, they will be proving they have the confidence to work safely at any level.Check out these photos of the team tackling their ladder assessments this week!
