*I imagine you won't remember our telephone conversation, but you spent over an hour I think talking to me and I just wanted to message and say thank you so much for that interaction. I was at my wits end with a horse who seemed completely unreachable (mentally and physically) and your advice and recommending the Karen Pryor book, essentially saved us. It took many months/years (he in fact remained feral for the rest of that summer), a lot of deconstructing how I thought and my expectations of him/us/me, going back to complete basics and discovering quite how tiny baby steps can be made, along with A LOT of tiny carrot bits, but Ritchie eventually became a fantastic hacking companion, adventure leader and on-the-ground play pal. Clicker training gave us a way of interacting, a way for me to "explain" things to him, which meant that we were able to tackle things that I would never have thought possible back when I spoke to you. We ended up showing other people the power of the approach (although I know we were not perfect and I never pretended we were the ideal!) but it was so cool to be able to pass on new ideas & ways of interacting with our horses to horsey pals. Sadly his health became poor over the last few years, with EMS, CPD & laminitis eating away at his quality of life. This February, I had to make the decision to have him put to sleep. I had not realised that all our training and trust would be put to its most important, bittersweet use when I was able to make the whole thing as smooth and calm as it is possible for these things to be. Thank you so much for that. I hope your operation goes well and you have a good recovery, and please know, even if not able to physically do the horse work, your phone calls are incredibly powerful too! Best wishes, Catriona
