🥊 IMPORTANT UPDATE – 6PM COMPETITION BOXING SESSION 🥊

Hi everyone,

We’re making a slight change to our sessions as we are now only one month away from the boxing season starting.

The 6pm session will now be specifically for our competition boxers and, as competition approaches, we need to stress just how important 100% commitment, dedication and attendance is.

Our competition boxers will be expected to attend the three training sessions provided each week wherever possible. This isn’t simply about improving fitness — it’s about preparing them properly for the demands of stepping into that ring.

Boxing is a fantastic sport, but it can also be incredibly challenging for young people. Results won’t always go their way, and we want to make sure that if they do lose a contest, it is not because they weren’t fit enough, prepared enough or committed enough.

There is also a very real safety aspect to this. As they get older, they can come up against opponents who may be more physically mature, stronger and more experienced. Boxing is not a game, and it needs to be taken seriously. Proper preparation and consistent training are essential.

We would therefore really appreciate parents having a conversation with their youngsters and making sure they genuinely want to compete and are prepared to commit to the training required.

If competition boxing isn’t something they feel ready to commit to at the moment, that is absolutely fine. They can continue to develop their skills and enjoy boxing in our 5pm–6pm non-competition class instead.

There is no pressure whatsoever — we simply want every young person in the right environment for them, while making sure those who do choose to compete are properly prepared, confident and safe. ❤️🥊

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding.

Let’s get them ready for the season! 🥊💪

Dear Councillor

I am writing to ask if you could please provide an update on the current position regarding a larger, permanent home for East Hull Boxing Academy and Community Hub.

During a radio interview in 2022, you stated that there was something in mind for the Academy. We are now in 2026, and I would be grateful if you could let us know whether there has been any progress, or if there are any current proposals being considered.

For the past 19 years, I have volunteered more than 14,820 hours to build and sustain the Academy, alongside working full-time, raising my family, running my own business and meeting the financial commitments of everyday life. Those hours include coaching, mentoring, safeguarding, administration, fundraising, organising competitions and matchmaking, as well as maintaining the building and ensuring the club remains open. Despite the personal and financial pressures, I have never walked away because I know how important the club is to the young people and families who rely on it.

East Hull Boxing Academy has become far more than a boxing club. It is a community hub and a safe place where children and young people aged 7 to 19 receive individual attention, encouragement and positive role models that many do not receive elsewhere. Many come from socially deprived backgrounds, large families or difficult home circumstances. Boxing gives them confidence, discipline, self-belief and a sense of belonging.

With an average attendance of around 280 young people each week, the Academy has provided approximately 276,640 youth attendances over the past 19 years. During that time we have seen young people progress into careers within the police, the fire and rescue service, the Royal Marines, the Armed Forces, skilled employment and higher education. Others have gone on to volunteer themselves, including taking part in conservation and humanitarian projects overseas, continuing the cycle of giving back to others.

The Academy has also supported adults who had lost confidence and struggled to find employment. Through coaching qualifications and mentoring, we have helped people develop the confidence to return to work and become positive role models themselves. One former coach developed their skills within our programme before establishing their own successful boxing club elsewhere in Hull, which has now been serving its community for more than 10 years. That is a lasting legacy that demonstrates the wider impact of investing in community sport.

The Academy’s work has always been about much more than boxing. It provides a safe environment, promotes healthier lifestyles, strengthens community cohesion and gives young people constructive opportunities that help steer them away from antisocial behaviour and crime. While it is difficult to attribute changes in crime rates to any single organisation, we firmly believe the Academy has played an important role in creating positive opportunities for young people and reducing the factors that can lead to offending within our local community.

In 2017, our members and I were invited to the Houses of Parliament by former MP Karl Turner, where we were given assurances that support would be sought to help us secure a permanent home. Nearly a decade later, despite the proven success and impact of the Academy, we are still operating from facilities that are no longer adequate for the demand placed upon them.

We understand that suitable premises are not easy to find, but we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any potential options. We have become aware that the former Barham pub building may be considered for community use and would be very interested in exploring whether it could provide a permanent home for East Hull Boxing Academy and Community Hub.

After nearly two decades of service, thousands of hours of unpaid work, and the positive impact the Academy has had on so many lives, I believe our community deserves to know what the future holds. A permanent home would allow us not only to continue our existing work but to expand our projects and support even more young people and families across East Hull.

I would be grateful if you could provide an update on the current position and advise whether a meeting could be arranged to discuss the future of the Academy.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Sean Ross

💙 A Huge Thank You to Our Incredible Sponsors – Hull Fibre! 💙

At East Hull Boxing Academy, we’d like to say a massive thank you to Hull Fibre for their continued support by providing the club with fast and reliable internet.

People often think it’s “just WiFi,” but for us, it means so much more.

🥊 Keeping our members safe – Our internet powers our CCTV system, giving parents and members peace of mind that the club is monitored and safeguarded whenever we’re open.

💳 Supporting our volunteers – Our till system relies on a stable internet connection, allowing volunteers to quickly process membership subscriptions while automatically keeping our accounts up to date. This saves valuable time that can be spent where it matters most – supporting our members.

🎵 Creating a great training atmosphere – Our WiFi also keeps the music playing during sessions, helping create the energy and motivation that makes training at East Hull Boxing Academy so enjoyable.

Hull Fibre haven’t just provided us with an internet connection – they’ve helped us create a safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable environment for everyone who walks through our doors.

Your support makes a real difference to our club, our volunteers, our members, and their families.
