6 years of competing and I still fu***ng love this sport.

Powerlifting has given me more than I ever expected from it.

Discipline. Community. A career. Something I’m fu***ng good at and an escape from everything else.

For all the sacrifices and frustrations that come with it I wouldn’t change it.

What do you love most about powerlifting? 👇

After 6 years competing high bar, I’ve finally got a reason to change it.

At British Nationals I was getting pulled forward as the weight got heavy, so I’ve started trying low bar. The aim is to improve the moment arm and not get pulled forward at heavier loads.

Second session I irritated a nerve through my biceps. Nerve glides sorted it and I’ve changed how I’m spacing bench around it.

Third session today. 245kg x3 with no issues.

Still figuring it out but it feels promising 🙏

What's your prefered bar position?

The longer I do this, the more I realise talent only gets you so far.

I’ve had clients with all the fu***ng talent in the world who never really fulfilled it.

Then I’ve had others who just refuse to fu***ng fold.

Something in their head lets them go somewhere other people won’t.

Maybe they’ve been through some s**t. Maybe training gives them somewhere to put it.

Whatever it is, when things get uncomfortable, they can fu***ng dial in.

Give me that over talent any day.

The first few times I competed, the clock got in my head.

Sixty seconds suddenly felt like ten.

I'd hurry my setup because I thought I was running out of time.

Looking back, I wasn't short of time.. I was short of experience.

Now I use those 60 seconds to make sure everything feels tight, locked in and on point before the bar leaves the rack.

What's your best cue for setting up under the bar?

This was 195kg at British Nationals.

That was a milestone, but it isn't the destination.

The goal is 200kg on the platform.

Every training block, every session and every decision from here on out is about earning those 5kg!

I'll be documenting the journey.. the highs, the setbacks and everything in between.

Who's chasing a big fish this year?!

Not every session is a win BUT every session is an opportunity to learn!

350kg attempt again after comp.. not there today but feeling very confident moving forward 800lb is still on for December and absolutely believe it will fall!

Positively today last warm up at 330 felt effortless.. this was a max attempt mid 2024 AND kept missing at the exact same position.

Life gives you want you need not always what you want.. how much you're willing to give often dictates the outcome 🫡

People often ask how I approach my attempts on meet day.

The answer is... each one has a completely different job.

1️⃣ First attempt – Get rid of the unnecessary nerves.

No matter how experienced you are, there's always adrenaline, anticipation and pressure.

The first attempt settles me into the competition. I feel the commands, get on the board and remind myself I'm exactly where I belong.

I'm not trying to impress anyone.

2️⃣ Second attempt – Put myself in position.

This is usually the lift I've planned around.

It should leave me in the position I want to be in and tell me exactly what's available for my third.

3️⃣ Third attempt – Empty the tank.

This is where I commit.

I've learnt over the years that I only really have one true maximal effort in me. Once I go all in, I'm done.

So I don't waste that effort trying to make every attempt look or even feel easy.

I save my biggest physical and mental effort for the one lift that matters most.

Everyone's strategy is different.

This is the one that's allowed me to perform at my best.

I don't care how talented you are.

I care how willing you are to learn.

I've spent most of my life competing. Swimming, rugby, strongman and now powerlifting. I've always been obsessed with finding out what I'm capable of.

That journey has led to becoming a 3× British Champion, 4× British Record Holder, and winning Hull's, Lincoln's & Merseyside Strongest Man.

But here's the thing...

None of that gets me out of bed in the morning.

Watching someone hit a PB they never thought possible.

Watching someone who lacked confidence start believing in themselves.

Watching someone completely change the direction of their life.

That's what I love.

I genuinely believe everyone has potential.

Most people never get close to it because they've already convinced themselves they can't.

My job isn't to blow smoke up your arse.

It's to challenge you, call you out when you need it, and help you become more than you ever thought possible.

I won't promise it's easy.

I won't tell you to "just stay motivated."

Because motivation comes and goes.

Discipline. Standards. Accountability.

That's what changes people.

If you're willing to learn...

If you're prepared to work...

And if you're ready to stop making excuses...

We'll get on just fine.

Welcome to Mankel Over Matter.
