🌊SAM SECURES RENEWABLES VIDEO SUCCESS🎥
Congratulations to former Sir John Nelthorpe student Sam Hunt, and former Hull Trinity House students Ollie Harrison and Alan Bajgot on their success in the Humber Marine & Renewables inspirational video competition.

Sam, now studying Media, English Language and Graphic Design at Wyke, took first prize, winning £250 in Amazon vouchers for his outstanding animated video highlighting the impact of the renewables sector on the Humber region's economy and future. Fellow Wyke students Ollie Harrison and Alan Bajgot were named runners-up, each receiving £50 in vouchers.

Sam said: “It was quite a long process, but I stuck with it and I’m very proud of myself. I’m debating career options within the media industry, but planning this project has given me an insight into renewables, and there are roles suited to that there too.”

Judges praised the creativity, professionalism and strong message behind the winning entry, which showcased the wide range of careers available in the renewable energy sector.

A fantastic achievement from all three students and a great example of local young people using their talents to promote the opportunities within our region's growing green economy. 🌊⚡🎥

🏆AWARD WINNING HISTORY GRADUATE🎓
Great to hear from former Wolfreton student Honey Simpkins, from the Wyke Class of 2022.

At Wyke, Honey studied History, English Language and Graphic Design, achieving an A* in History, A in English Language and B in Graphic Design.

After taking a gap year, Honey decided to pursue her passion for History and contacted Wyke for a UCAS reference. That decision has led to remarkable success, graduating from the University of Hull with First Class Honours in History and receiving both the David Hutchinson Prize for Social and Cultural History, which recognises achievement in social and cultural history, and the Kingsley Prize, awarded for outstanding performance within History.

Honey said, “I wouldn’t have gone on to achieve what I did, and wouldn’t have had the confidence to do so, without my Wyke History teacher, Andrew Bentley, whose teaching, advice and support not only sparked my interest in history but also convinced me that I was capable of succeeding within this subject.”

She added, “I would be quite happy if you wished to share my story to really honour Wyke’s History Department to which I owe my qualification truly.”

Congratulations, Honey. We are incredibly proud of your achievements and delighted to see the impact that dedication, talent and a love of learning can have.

⭐CHANGING LIVES⭐
Former .school student Emilia Hinch, from the Wyke Class of 2022, is building a rewarding career helping people overcome barriers and create positive futures.

At Wyke, Emilia studied A Level Criminology and Sociology alongside vocational Law, gaining a strong understanding of the criminal justice system and the wider factors that influence behaviour.

Reflecting on her studies, Emilia said, “Criminology introduced me to key theories and case studies, Sociology helped me understand the bigger picture around society and inequality, and Law gave me insight into how the justice system works in practice. This meant I went to university with a solid foundation of knowledge already in place.”

Wyke also helped Emilia develop essential academic skills, including essay writing, critical thinking and research. These foundations gave her the confidence to progress to Leeds Beckett University, where she achieved a First Class Honours degree in Criminology and Psychology.

Her time at Wyke also helped shape her career ambitions, inspiring her to pursue a role where she could support individuals within the criminal justice system.

Today, Emilia works for Ingeus, a global organisation commissioned by the UK Ministry of Justice. In her role, she supports people in prison and on probation to overcome barriers, build confidence and move towards more positive futures.

“The skills I developed at Wyke are things I now use every day in my role.”

Looking back on her journey, Emilia recognises the important role Wyke played in her success.

“Wyke played a big part in shaping both my academic journey and my career path. It gave me the confidence, knowledge and skills I needed to succeed at university and move into a career where I can make a difference.”

We are delighted to see Emilia using her skills, knowledge and passion to make a real difference in the lives of others.

🧪FROM PRACTICAL SKILLS TO A DEGREE APPRENTICESHIP🔬
Congratulations to former Pocklington School student Edward Milner, who has secured a prestigious five-year Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Research & Development with Reckitt. After studying Applied Science and vocational Business, Edward felt he had developed his practical skills as well as his academic ability.

To prepare for his apprenticeship interview, Edward practised answering common competency-based questions, particularly around teamwork and problem solving. Drawing on examples from part-time work in hospitality and experiences working with others helped him demonstrate the skills employers value most.

"Be confident, be nice, show respect and be passionate about what you're doing. I have a massive passion for science, and that really motivated me throughout the process."

Starting this September, Edward will combine workplace learning with an Applied Chemistry degree delivered through the University of Kent, while gaining valuable experience working on products used by millions of people around the world.

We are looking forward to celebrating with Edward on results day.
