I was very lucky with the guitarist who taught me when I was young and has continued to teach me through my entire life and became a close friend of mine.

He was a seasoned and highly acclaimed session musician with a speciality in technical jazz who had toured worldwide and played with people including Tom Jones, Rick Wakeman, Ray Charles, Shirley Bassey and Ringo Starr. He was also a highly trained composer and arranger, he would compose full shows of musicians across South Africa, even arranging string parts and more, so from a young age my guitar lessons covered far more than learning where to put my fingers.

I learned to read music, full theory, I did ear training. We talked about harmony, keys, chords, progressions and how music was put together. Our favourite genre to play together has always been jazz. I was taught to listen properly as well as play, and a lot of what he taught me has stayed with me for life.

That background comes into the way I teach now, although I learnt a long time ago that giving every pupil the same type of lesson makes very little sense.

Some people want to know everything. They’ll ask why a chord works, what key we’re in, why a seventh chord sounds the way it does or what they’re hearing when a piece changes direction. I love that and I’ll go as far into it as they want. Others walk into their first lesson and tell me they want to learn everything about music from the ground up, including sheets and theory. So we start with the very foundations.

Other people hear the word “theory” and you can almost see them switch off. So I don’t sit somebody down and announce that we’re doing half an hour of music theory.

We might be learning a song they’ve chosen and I’ll ask, “Do you know what key this is in?” Or, “Can you hear what happens when we move to this chord?” We might talk about it for two minutes and they’ve picked up a bit of theory without feeling as though they’ve been given a theory lesson.

Even a very simple song can teach you an enormous amount if you know what to listen for.

If somebody has no interest in any of that and says, “Charlie, I just want to play this song”, that’s fine too. We’ll get the guitar out, work out the parts and play it.

The advantage of having had that broader training myself is that, if somebody does want to go further, I can take them there. If you want to learn composition, arrangement, songwriting, ear training, prepare properly for a full performance, understand harmony in more depth or get into jazz, I can work with you on all of that. But not every guitarist wants to know theory and I know many successful guitarists who don’t know theory and are also self taught and that’s great.

Equally, if you want lessons to stay relaxed and straightforward and you just want to become a better guitarist, learn the songs you love and enjoy playing more, I’m very happy teaching that way too.

After teaching so many different people over the years, children and adults included, I’ve found that you get much further when you pay attention to the person sitting in front of you. I ask a lot of questions, I want to know what music they listen to, what they can already do, where they get frustrated and how they like to learn.

Then I teach from there.

If you’re looking for guitar lessons for yourself or your child, I teach one-to-one from my guitar room in Kings Langley, as well as online.

You’re always welcome to get in touch and tell me a bit about what you’d like to learn.

🎸 The summer Adult Guitar Workshops have officially wrapped and I’ve loved doing them.

When I put these sessions together, I wanted to create something a little different from traditional guitar lessons: a relaxed, friendly space where adults could actually play with other people, learn new things, build confidence and enjoy making music together.

Hearing what some of the group had to say afterwards has genuinely made my day.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Charlie is an attentive and patient teacher, who recognises everyone’s individual strengths and practice points… He is a very skilled and versatile musician himself, so it was easy to get inspired and motivated to keep practicing.”
— Debbie

And from Salvatore:

“It was fun and inspiring. I got to learn and play with different people which is what learning music is about. Charlie is a great teacher and I will definitely be back.”
— Salvatore

Thank you to everyone who came along and made the workshops what they were. It was brilliant hearing the group develop and play together over the sessions.

A few people have already asked whether I’ll be doing them again, so I’m now looking at the possibility of another Adult Guitar Workshop series around October here in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. 🎸

Nothing is confirmed just yet, but if you missed the summer workshops and would like first refusal when I announce future dates, you can join my no-obligation October workshop waitlist here:

You don’t need to be an advanced guitarist. These are for adults who want to improve, play with other people, get out of the cycle of practising the same things at home and enjoy guitar in a friendly, encouraging environment.

Joining the waitlist doesn’t commit you to anything, it simply means you’ll hear about the next dates first if I go ahead.

And if you know someone locally who has been saying “I really need to pick my guitar up again…” please feel free to send this their way. 😊

Last few places for next week’s Adult Summer Guitar Workshops in Kings Langley

If you’ve been meaning to get back into guitar, would enjoy playing with other adults, or feel as though practicing alone has taken you as far as it can, I have a small number of places left on my adult workshop course starting next Monday.

This is a three-part course held at my home teaching practice in Kings Langley. Everyone attends the same three sessions, giving the group time to get comfortable, play together and build on what we cover.

The confirmed dates and times are:

Monday 20 July, 12.15pm–2.15pm
Thursday 23 July, 12.15pm–2.15pm
Friday 24 July, 11am-1pm

Attendance is required on all three dates. Each workshop lasts two hours, giving you six hours of tuition across the course.

The workshops are open to adults at any stage, including beginners, returning players and people who already play but would like more guidance or experience playing alongside others.

We’ll cover practical guitar playing, timing, musicianship, confidence and group playing, with plenty of support throughout. Acoustic and electric guitar players are both welcome and you’ll need to bring your own guitar.

The full course fee is £165, which works out at £27.50 per hour.

As the first workshop is next week, full payment will now be required straight away to secure one of the remaining places. Your place is only confirmed once payment has been received.

Advance booking only. Walk-ins and bookings for individual dates cannot be accommodated.

To register, please complete the short form today:

https://form.typeform.com/to/J8YnO7vN

Once I receive your registration, I’ll come back to you with payment details and the final joining information.

I’ve taught guitar full-time for more than 20 years and have worked with over 500 pupils from my Kings Langley practice. I’m looking forward to bringing a small group of local adult guitarists together for these sessions.

If you keep saying, “I really should pick the guitar up again,” I’ve put together the course that will get it back into your hands.

This July, I’m running a small-group guitar short, friendly course for adults in Kings Langley across three weekday afternoons.

It has been created for people who played years ago and have gradually stopped, as well as adults who are learning now and would benefit from playing alongside other musicians. You may know a few chords but struggle to practice consistently, feel stuck playing the same material, or miss having other people to play with.

Across six hours, I’ll help you develop your timing, musicianship and confidence while experiencing what it feels like to play as part of a group. The atmosphere will be friendly and supportive, with guidance throughout. You can bring either an acoustic or electric guitar.

The full course takes place on:

Monday 20 July, 12.15pm to 2.15pm
Thursday 23 July, 12.15pm to 2.15pm
Friday 24 July, 11am to 1pm

All three workshops must be attended.

The course fee is £165 per person, including six hours of tuition. A £20 deposit secures your confirmed place, with the remaining balance due before the course begins.

I’m Charlie Hodgson, a professional guitarist and tutor with more than 20 years’ playing experience and over 500 pupils taught. I run private lessons and small-group sessions from my home studio in Kings Langley.

Advance booking is required and walk-ins cannot be accommodated. Booking covers the complete three-workshop course, so individual dates cannot be purchased separately. The deposit and remaining balance are non-refundable once your place has been confirmed. Cancellations, non-attendance and requests to move the booking cannot be refunded.

🎸 Bring your guitar and come prepared to play.

Register your interest or reserve a place here:

*A £20 deposit secures your confirmed place. Places are kept limited to preserve the small-group format.

🎸 A little announcement…

After quite a few conversations over the years, and a lot of encouragement from pupils, former pupils, parents and friends, I’ve finally decided to do something I’ve been thinking about for a long time.

I’m launching…

🎸 Charlie’s Guitar Circle

A live online international guitar community for adults, returners and self-taught players who would like a bit more structure, support and connection in their playing.

Over the last 20+ years of teaching, one thing I’ve noticed time and time again is that most people don’t stop playing because they aren’t capable.

Sometimes they stop because they’re trying to do it on their own.

Life gets busy.

Motivation comes and goes.

The guitar sits in the corner for a few weeks.

Before long, months have passed.

Guitar Circle is designed to change that.

Twice a month we’ll meet live online for relaxed small-group sessions where we’ll focus on practical guitar skills, musicianship, confidence, understanding what to practice and simply enjoying playing music together.

No pressure or intimidating masterclasses, no huge online platforms or self guided modules to get through.

The idea is real people learning alongside other real people, with live guidance from me and an intimate community of other learners like you.

A lot of my current pupils have already said they’d love something like this as an additional way to learn alongside other guitarists, ask questions and stay motivated between lessons, so existing pupils are very welcome too if you’d like an extra layer of support and community around your playing.

And if it’s not for you personally, I’d be hugely grateful if you’d share it with any friends, family members, colleagues or fellow musicians who might enjoy it.

It will be a monthly subscription with access to a small group community and bi weekly live group sessions with me. The first sessions are potentially planned for Thursday mornings and I’m now opening a Founding Member Waitlist.

The first members will receive a reduced founding rate and help shape the community from the very beginning.

If you’d like to find out more or join the waitlist, you can do so here:

🎸 Something a little different this summer…

After over 20 years of teaching guitar one-to-one, I’m excited to say that I’ll be running my first ever small-group Summer Guitar Workshop this August.

The response has been lovely and I’m now finalising the group, with a few places still available.

This particular workshop is for young guitarists aged 9–13 who already have some playing experience and would enjoy meeting other musical children, playing together, learning new songs and developing their confidence in a relaxed, supportive environment.

These aren’t formal lessons and they’re not designed to feel like school.

The aim is simply to bring together a small group of young people who enjoy music and give them the opportunity to learn, play and create together over the summer holidays.

🎸 NOW CONFIRMED

📅 Monday 3rd August | 12.15pm–2.15pm
📅 Thursday 13th August | 12.15pm–2.15pm
📅 Friday 21st August | 12.15pm–2.15pm

📍 Kings Langley
🎸 Ages 9–13
🎵 Best suited to children who already play guitar
👥 Small-group environment
✅ DBS checked & fully insured

A quick note: the children already booked onto this particular workshop are working at roughly Grade 2–3 level, so this particular group won’t be focusing on absolute beginner basics.

If your child is a complete beginner, please still register your interest below. I’ve had quite a few enquiries from beginner guitarists and may well run separate beginner workshops if there’s enough interest.

For any of my current pupils, these workshops would be in addition to your usual lessons rather than replacing them.

If you know a young guitarist who might enjoy being part of the group, please do feel free to share this post or pass it on.

I’ve also had a number of enquiries about adult workshops for beginners and returners. Those aren’t confirmed yet, but if you’d like to register your interest onto my waiting list, you can do so here:

Feel free to share this around for anyone who might be interested.

As always, thank you for your support.

A really nice moment from earlier this year.

Back in January, I spent the day at Shrewsbury Town & Shrewsbury Town FC Foundation running a series of guitar and music sessions across the academy and wider club.

It started as a one-off, but it’s since been featured in the club’s matchday programme and shared online, which was lovely to see.

Across the day I worked with players of all ages, many picking up a guitar for the first time. Something calm, creative, and completely separate from performance.

It was great to see how quickly they settled into it.

I’m doing more of this kind of work now alongside my regular teaching, using music as a way to support confidence, focus and wellbeing.

Hi everyone, I wanted to float an idea and see what people think 😊

I’m considering running a few small summer guitar workshops for children at my usual home guitar practice in Kings Langley during the school holidays this year (Summer 2026 school term) and just wanted to get a feel for whether there’d be any interest locally.

The idea would be something quite calm and friendly, small groups of children (grouped by similar age and ability), coming together for a couple of hours in the morning, lunchtime or early afternoon to learn some guitar, play music together and just enjoy a bit of creative, screen-free time.

Nothing intense or “school-like”, more relaxed, confidence-building and fun.
For those who come to a few sessions, we could even work towards learning, writing or creating something together as a group. These will be ran as either a course of summer workshops, or some one-off options pending interest.

From a parent point of view, it would hopefully give you a bit of breathing space during the holidays- a couple of hours to yourself while your child is doing something positive, social and creative.

I’d likely keep it quite small and personal, run from my home space in Kings Langley, with snacks and drinks included.

At this stage I’m just testing the waters - I’ll only go ahead if there’s enough genuine interest to make it work properly.

If it’s something you might be interested in for your child (even just a one-off session), I’d really appreciate it if you could take 30 seconds to register interest here:

No commitment at all, it just helps me understand numbers, ages and what parents would find most useful.

Happy to answer any questions in the comments or via message.

Thanks so much,
Charlie 🎸

Please do share this around to gather interest ❤️

A nice surprise this week.

Following my recent guitar and wellbeing sessions at Shrewsbury Town FC, the day has been featured in the club’s official matchday programme.

It was a privilege to spend time working with the academy & scholar players, staff and Foundation team, using music as a practical tool to support focus, confidence and life beyond the pitch.

I’m grateful to Natalie, John and the wider Shrewsbury Town FC team for the invitation and the trust.

The work itself is always the priority, but it’s appreciated when it’s recognised.

Thank you 💙 Shrewsbury Town Shrewsbury Town FC Foundation
