Brilliant Film Academy is a specialist filmmaking academy for young people aged 11–19 who want to take that interest further. Students get hands-on with professional cameras, lighting and sound equipment while learning directing, cinematography, editing, storytelling and the many different roles involved in bringing a production together.

And importantly, they don’t just practise. They make films, work on real projects, build portfolios and learn from experienced filmmakers who understand the industry 🎥

The first few minutes of a film have a pretty big job to do…

They need to introduce us to a world, establish a tone, give us someone or something to care about, and, crucially, make us want to keep watching 🎥

But a great opening scene doesn’t necessarily explain everything. Often, it does the opposite. It gives the audience just enough information to understand what’s happening while creating questions they want answered.

At Brilliant Film Academy, our students learn to think about filmmaking as storytelling. Every choice, from the first camera angle to the lighting, sound and performance, can change how an audience experiences a scene.

So next time you watch a film, pay attention to those first few minutes: What has the filmmaker done to make you stay?

Two academies, two creative disciplines: One incredible collaboration ✨

A few weeks ago, our students stepped behind the cameras to film the Academy Digital Showcase, capturing every routine, every performance and every special moment. Working on real productions like this gives our students the opportunity to experience filmmaking exactly as it happens in the industry: planning shots, adapting on the fly and working as part of a professional production team!

Not only did our dancers receive a fantastic showcase film, but our filmmakers gained invaluable hands-on experience working on a live project. That’s what we call learning by doing!

What happens when talented young filmmakers and talented young performers come together? 🎬🎭

A few weeks ago, our Brilliant Film Academy students were behind the cameras, capturing every moment of the Brand New British Musical Festival, while our students took to the stage. From backstage moments to show-stopping performances, they covered every angle. In fact... they captured so much incredible footage, it could almost be a short film in its own right!

This is what the Brilliant Academies are all about: young creatives learning together, collaborating on real projects, and gaining experience that goes far beyond the classroom.
