We're on the other side of the teams tonight and as promised, plenty of bushcraft!! Although "Boom!", "D-d-ding!" And "Shoot!" are probably some of our better explanations 🤣🤣

Forty minutes, no time warnings, and a fading sun... 🔥🔥

Last week's first Outcrafter session of the term was such a buzz. Clan setup and welcome-back admin took up a fair bit longer than planned, meaning our detailed Fire Craft Workshop had to adapt on the fly.

Equipped with their fire craft boxes, their own brilliant knowledge, and a vague clue card, the Outcrafters were set a rapid challenge. They had to dig a fire spot, build the correct formation to match their card - Star, TeePee, Log Cabin, Lean-to, or Dakota - and explain why that specific fire suited their scenario card. To top it off, they had to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and safely buried by 8:10pm sharp, leaving no trace and zero risk of underground root fires.

We thought forty minutes with no time warnings would prove a proper test, but they absolutely smashed it. Managing their own time against the sunset while delivering spot-on explanations showcased just how much these young people know about their craft.

A brilliant start to the term, setting the bar high for the weeks ahead!

Okay... tomorrow's post we promise will be about bushcraft! But tonight, we wanted to do one last shout out about Friday night.

We are just so proud of these young people and the community they keep building together. At the weekend, we quite rightly spent time celebrating the ones who stepped up to lead our clans this year, but honestly, every single one of them deserves a mention. There is so much negativity out there about today's youth, but our crew completely turns that on its head.

The way they respect each other, dive into their craft, and look out for one another is just brilliant to see.

On Friday, they all sat down and mapped out what they wanted the clans to look like this year. They voted on new leadership roles, plus a couple of brand new ones like Ambassadors and Quartermasters to look after the kit. The best part? This is entirely driven by them. They are the ones coming up with these ideas and taking on the responsibility because they actually want to shape it. Being a part of that is pretty special.

Introducing our new Clan Leaders 🫡

While we may just be a Friday night club, the community these young people have built is far bigger! Each year we hold a vote, asking the children to choose who they think are the best people to lead them through the next academic year. Being a Clan Leader is a huge privilege, not only because they are chosen by their peers, but because they inherit control over how the clans look, feel, and run (including an annual budget, builds, and setups within the clans).

Of course, it also comes with responsibility! A responsibility that we know these young people will proudly carry forward 💪🔥

While they have big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of some inspiring previous leaders, we are so excited to see what this new team brings to the table. They'll be building on that strong foundation with their own fresh ideas, unique leadership styles, and collaborative spirit as they navigate a brand new year of adventures!

This has genuinely blown our minds! Laura has been working absolute magic in the kitchen, turning harvested seeds from the Common Lime (Tilia × europaea) into a remarkably rich, chocolatey base and hand-crafting full-blown truffles. 🤯🍫

Foraging for wild chocolate right here in the UK sounds like pure alchemy, but it actually taps into a brilliant bit of British botanical history. The Common Lime is a tree found lining ancient woodlands, country lanes, and village greens right across the country. In late summer and autumn, these trees drop clusters of small, hard nutlets attached to distinct leafy bracts.

Back in the 18th century, chemists discovered that drying, roasting, and finely grinding these oil-rich nutlets releases complex tannins and natural fats, producing a paste with a flavour and texture astonishingly similar to imported cocoa.

Turns out you don't need a tropical cocoa plantation when our native broadleaf woodlands are dropping chocolate alternatives straight from the canopy! 🌿✨

Whilst the hike team headed off on their adventures to the North Norfolk coast, the rest of us jumped aboard the bus to head to Nene Outdoors for a day on the water. 🌊🚌

We didn't have to wait too long for the water, as we soon drove through some much-needed torrential rain and a thunderstorm, which was rather magical whilst tucked up in the bus! ⛈️✨

When we arrived at Nene Outdoors, we headed in and got changed into wetsuits and buoyancy aids ready to begin some exciting activities! However, the thunder and lightning must have followed us, as there was a flash of lightning in the distance, meaning we would be unable to go onto the water until 30 minutes had passed with no visible lightning. ⚡🪢

But this didn't dampen our spirits, and we did what we do best: adapt, overcome, and keep a positive mental attitude! Our instructors were really great and helpful during this time (thanks Nene Outdoors!) and provided some spur-of-the-moment pioneering and problem-solving activities which filled the room with chatter, teamwork, and laughter! We barely even noticed the 30-minute wait and were soon ready to jump into our first activity. 🤝🧠

Bell boating was a great laugh and lots of fun, from hopscotch and jumping into the water to belting out the SpongeBob SquarePants theme tune! 🎶🚣

After a quick lunch, we re-entered the water for some stand-up paddleboarding before making our own rafts to sail! We had a perfect opportunity to showcase our teamwork and knowledge of knots whilst having a great time. There were varied levels of success in getting moving on the rafts, with one raft being dubbed the 'Titanic' 🙈, but the most important thing was the smiles, laughter, and good mood that just emanated from the group! 🪵⛵

We received so many lovely compliments on the resilience, behaviour, and attitude of the young people, which really was the cherry on the top of a very special day! 🍒🌟

Building on a previous post: not all days go to plan 🤔, but those days can be some of the best! This was definitely one of them.

With the changes to week 4, not everyone could get to Nene for paddle sports. So instead, we planned one final, very different hike, added a trip on the North Norfolk Railway, and finished off with a beach visit and ice cream!

For the first time in four weeks, we actually left the woodland on time! We made great progress to Holt Country Park to start our hike, focusing on traditional navigation and bearings. It quickly became clear, however, that this was NOT going to be the route we planned...

Nearly two hours of trekking, crawling, climbing, marsh-hopping, and river-chasing later, we realised the path on our map was completely fenced off!

A failure? Heck no!! This was a huge win for these young people. They navigated brilliantly, problem-solved on the fly, and looked after each other every step of the way. And while our knees (and everything else!) were soaked from the rain and humidity, it was easily the best hike of the summer.

The train was a very welcome sight! We stepped into a proper Harry Potter-esque carriage (or 'cartridge', as it was quickly nicknamed! 😂), complete with vintage compartments that felt straight out of Hogwarts. A masterpiece of engineering, though only Inside Out children could get quite this excited over a retro Brasso sign! 😂💪🔥

The train took us to Sheringham one last time, where we had the entire beach to ourselves. Yes, it was raining, and yes, it was grey - but crikey, was it great fun! After wave-jumping and an alarming amount of seaweed, we hunted down one last ice cream stop, taking shelter from the rain in front of the arcade.

Just when we thought it couldn't get better, a steam locomotive rolled into the station. Very excitingly, the crew let us up onto the engine (we were just as excited as the kids!), and everyone had massive envy for the fire resting in the furnace. The group just absorbed all the knowledge from such passionate volunteers.

A spot of tree ID later and a close call with train times, we were heading back to Holt.

All in all, a fantastic day!

Camps may well be over, but the impressions left, the memories forged, and the skills crafted are far, far from gone.

I’d like to sit here and say that none of it happens by accident, but sometimes those unplanned moments are actually just as important as the programmed ones. We’ve chopped, changed, and adapted to every challenge thrown our way. Yet while programmes, weather, and activities might shift, the one constant is this genuinely amazing team.

Tonight, I want to take a moment on here to say a heartfelt thank you to Laura, Sam, Olivia, Colton, Toby, David, Imogen, Lucas, Billy, and Tyler.

Without this team of incredible people, none of these adventures would be possible. That isn't just down to their adaptability, grit, and hard work every single day, but down to who they are as human beings.

Being an instructor goes way beyond showing someone how to light a fire or read a map. It’s about being that steady presence both when things are going to plan and when they aren't. It’s about the genuine care they show, looking out for everyone, and creating a space where people feel safe enough to push past their limits and achieve things they didn't think possible. It's about showing that none of us have to be perfect to make a real difference!

So, tonight (and while both Sam and Olivia are busy running the Silver DofE 😁) I want to celebrate and, most importantly, thank this team for an extraordinary summer season. From the madness of the school residentials through to four full-on weeks of summer camps, this team have shaped experiences that these young people, and we all, will carry with them for years.

Thank you for the endless energy, the heart, and the dedication!
