The newly released 2026 Language Trends Survey highlights some of the challenges primary schools are facing when it comes to delivering languages.

⏰ Not enough time on already-busy timetables
👩‍🏫 A lack of specialist language teachers
📚 Limited teaching resources
💷 Budget pressures or no budget at all
🔄 Lessons being squeezed around competing priorities
❌ Language lessons sometimes cancelled when the timetable needs to make room for something else

And the result? Language learning can become inconsistent. A lesson here...a lesson there. Different approaches. Long gaps between sessions.

Children learn languages best when they have regular opportunities to listen, speak, practise and build on what they already know.

We want to keep children's minds focused, and open and curious, but learning a language also benefits teenagers, young adults and adults.

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿?
Those first French or Spanish words children learn in La Jolie Ronde classes could be doing much more than introducing them to another culture.

Exciting new research that is being presented at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies conference in Barcelona, suggests that speaking multiple languages may be linked to a “younger” brain, with bilingual and multilingual people showing signs of healthier brain ageing.

So the earlier children are introduced to another language, the more time their brains have to build these powerful connections — and developing strong language skills may help support brain health throughout life.

Even more fascinating, the benefits seem to increase with every additional language learned. Researchers found that bilingual brains appeared around six years younger, while those speaking four languages showed brain characteristics up to 13 years younger.

While more research is still needed, one thing is already clear: learning another language gives your brain an incredible workout!!!
