I was a very nervous learner and Stuart totally put me at ease, he has the patience of a saint. He got me, my sister and now my son all passed. I would highly recommend hornell school of motoring to any learner driver.
A good guide 😁
Keep your eyes wide open and focus on the road as it's not a pleasant experience hitting a deer on the dual carriageway at 70mph!
Shocking. Watch how long his eyes are off the road😑
Scary stats😲

Friendly, local driving coach which can cater for all needs and abilities. With a 'can do' attitude

More tests coming up shortly.

From DVSA

Tackling the driving test waiting times with more test appointments

To help tackle the high driving test waiting times, DVSA is making around 150,000 additional test appointments available over the next 6 months. We are doing this by deploying more trained staff to carry out driving tests full time up to 31 March 2024.

Most people who are trained to do a driving test are driving examiners. However some staff who are trained have moved on to other roles in the agency, including as local driving test managers, operational managers and policy experts. Until now some of these individuals have been testing in addition to their usual job.

We are now asking them to do driving tests full-time, which will mean they are unable to do their usual roles. We will do all we can to limit the effect this has on the other services we offer.

How ADI testing and standards checks will be affected

During this time we will significantly reduce the number of standards checks and will continue to offer ADI part 2 and 3 tests. If we need to cancel or rearrange your standards check we will contact you.

We will continue to monitor driving test performance whilst prioritising car driving tests.

Putting the additional tests on the booking service

On Monday 2 October we will start to add these extra appointments to the booking service. This will cover test appointments for 6 October to 3 November.

It will take a few days for all the appointments to be added.

Then on 16 October, we will start to add appointments for 4 November to 18 November.

Again, it will take a few days for all the appointments to be added.

We'll repeat this every 2 weeks. For example, we'll add more appointments on 30 October, 13 November and so on.

We'll continue to do this until additional appointments are available up to 31 March 2024.

Making the most of the additional tests

It’s really important that we make every additional test count to work together to reduce the current high driving test waiting times.

We know that many of your pupils have been using the Ready to Pass? campaign resources to help prepare for their test – and found them really useful.

We also know that many of you have used the resources on the site to work with your pupils to make sure they only go for their test when they are ready to do so.

The campaign has been designed to support you and reinforce the messages you already give your pupils. You can visit the campaign website for 10 ways that you can help us spread the word.

Some useful tips here for all road users.

The Goal is to save lives.

~Defensive_driving~

defensive driving is a form of training for motor vehicle drivers that goes beyond mastery of the rules of the road and the basic mechanics of driving. Its aim is to reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others.

Avoid accidents by correcting problems that may become dangerous. Consider these top ten defensive driving tips.

Defensive Driving Tip #1: Eliminate Distractions

Scientists have studied the reasons behind the large number of car accidents that occur every year, and the most common cause is that the driver has been distracted. For this reason, eliminating distractions is #1 among top ten defensive driving tips. Limit the number of distractions that you have in the car, such as eating or talking.

Defensive Driving Tip #2: Focus on the Horizon

Rather than keeping your eyes fixed on the car right in front of you, keep your eyes on the horizon as you watch the traffic ahead of you. You will be able to see any activity that may cause an accident, and it will give you plenty of time to adjust accordingly.

Defensive Driving Tip #3: Stay in One Lane as Much as Possible

Many car accidents happen when a person suddenly changes lanes and gets rear ended. Choose a lane and stay there as long as possible.

Defensive Driving Tip #4: Keep an Eye on Lane Changers

If you aren't the one changing lanes, then you need to keep an eye on those who are. Many drivers try to slip between cars, even if it is too dangerous to do so. Watch all of your mirrors so that you can see anyone who may be approaching you quickly. Slow down to let them pass if necessary.

Defensive Driving Tip #5: Watch Blind Spots

While some people may not zip in and out of traffic, others carelessly move into another lane without checking their blind spots. In order to avoid getting struck by one of these drivers, stay out of the blind spots of the cars around you. You can accelerate so that they can see you clearly, or you can slow down so that you are a safe distance behind the other car.

Defensive Driving Tip #6: Avoid Eye Contact

Scientists have found that road rage is escalated when drivers look directly at one another. Most people who suffer from road rage are looking for ways to anger others rather than getting angry about something that has just occurred. Avoid making eye contact with these drivers, and continue driving as you were.

Defensive Driving Tip #7: Check Intersections

Intersections are where many accidents occur. Many drivers will simply start driving when the light turns green, but not everyone stops when the light turns red. Check your left side for any cars that are ignoring the red light, and then look to the right before you start driving through the intersection.

Defensive Driving Tip #8: Know the Rules of Swerving

It is very important that you only swerve if you are unable to prevent an accident otherwise. In order to swerve safely, you should make sure that the lane that you will be entering is empty, and return to your lane immediately to prevent further problems.

Defensive Driving Tip #9: Keep Your Distance from Bad Drivers

If you notice that someone is showing signs of being a bad driver, then you need to keep your distance. You may want to change lanes and slow down to let the car pass so that you don't have a chance of it rear ending you. If you need to pass a bad driver, try to keep a good distance between you.

Defensive Driving Tip #10: Don't Tailgate

When you drive too closely to another vehicle, you increase your risk for an accident because you leave yourself very little room to avoid an accident. Try to stay at least three to four seconds behind the person in front of you. If you have a larger vehicle, you will need to allow more room so that you will have enough time to stop. Tailgating is on just about every top ten defensive driving tips list, and for good reason.

By following these top ten defensive driving tips, you will be able to prevent accidents by simply being more aware about what is going on around you.

In 3 days time Gary and I are taking on 56 miles across the Southern Upland Way to raise funds for the Ayrshire Hospice in memory of my brother Morrison Hornell who sadly passed away in the hospice during September 2011. The care given to him during his final days in the hospice has never been forgotten and its time to give back to the hospice.
Training has been going well to prepare us for the day and so far we have raised Β£1100 for the Hospice with our intention to try raise Β£1500 for this fabulous place. Any donations would be greatly appreciated even Β£1 or Β£2 and we both now have sponsor sheets if you prefer this to online.
This is way above anything we've done before 56 mile along swamps and hills from St John of Dalry to Moffat to help the HospiceπŸ˜€
Huge thanks to Anthea, Jordann and Vicky for been our support crew on the day and to all who have sponsored us so far its greatly appreciated ❀️❀️❀️

πŸš™ With the continuing lack of test availability at any local driving test centre, a few words from one of my colleagues and me!!!!

πŸš™ Almost on a daily basis, we are getting enquiries from people with test dates booked and no instructor to take them or a car to take the test in! A recent request even saying that they’re not very good at reversing and also wanting to know what is required during a test, with all this giving me one week’s notice!

πŸš™ The best person to tell you what is required on a test and to get you test ready is a driving instructor. The use of my car or any instructor’s car is not a given right but a privilege and I only hand over the keys to my car to a pupil that I have trained and I am confident they will treat it with respect totally independently and have enough knowledge and experience to pass a test. So telling me you want to use my car, when a test is booked and giving me no time to fit you in into non-existent availability is just NOT HAPPENING.

πŸš™ In the meantime, we are continuing to train our pupils that are nearing test readiness and no tests available because they have been taken up by people that have no chance of sitting a test on that day. This is also causing a high number of no shows on test day.

πŸš™ What’s the solution? Get a driving instructor, get the correct training then with your instructor’s advice and consent book a test when they become available. Let’s do this the right way then we can all work together to help clear the backlog!
