As driving instructors we can only advise people about their readiness to take a test!

You may think you are driving well when the instructor is:

Telling you when to change gear!
Asking you what the speed limit is!
Talking you through every manoeuvre!
Telling you which lane to be in!
Reminding you which exit to come off of on a roundabout because you forget!
Helping you when you canโ€™t workout if there is enough space for you to get your car through!

If all or any of the above apply to you, then you are not test ready!

When the door shuts and itโ€™s just you and the examiner, the car is the loneliest place to be, when you make a mistake and your brain goes to mush itโ€™s the worst feeling ever!

Remember those family and friends who urge you to just have a go for the experience, arenโ€™t the ones having to go through it, people have very selective memoryโ€™s when it comes to driving and tests!

Ask anyone who has failed a test if it was a nice experience!

Remember itโ€™s YOU doing the test, no one else, no phone to google answers, no help from anyone else just YOU!

If you are up to standard, you will still be nervous, but you wonโ€™t be doubtful of your ability!

Go look in the mirror and have a straight talk with yourself!

This is a skill for life.
It saves YOUR life and other road users lives..

The big question is.......

Would you take an exam if you hadnโ€™t studied enough and then expect to pass it?

Using media to spread awareness ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

Thanks for reading.

Huge congratulations and early Xmas present for Isla. Been a pleasure to have taken this journey with you to passing your driving test FIRST TIME. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ

If you book your driving test, which in all cases is a provisional booking, this is subject to change should you not fulfill the required standard.
Driving Instructors are not supposed to present any pupil to test if they do not feel they are ready, this directive comes from the DVSA, the people who make the rules.

So hereโ€™s a few questions to ask yourselfโ€ฆ

Can you change gear without being prompted?
Can you steer effectively and safely?
Can you use the brake without help from your instructor?
Can you spot hazards and drive accordingly?
When approaching a junction, can you slow down and stop at the Give Way lines if needs be?
Not a car length back, or over the lines?
Do you know what the National speed limit is on a dual carriageway compared to other roads?
Can you maintain safe speeds and adjust your speed accordingly using signs?
When meeting traffic, can you decide who has priority?
Can you position yourself in such a way that you can see ahead and also give space to oncoming cars?
Mirrors, do you use them correctly, looking to see whatโ€™s there before deciding to swap lanes or slow down suddenly?
Do you know when and where you should signal?
Roundabouts and lanes, do you know which lane to use when travelling ahead, turning right etc, do you know when you should use a different lane and how that decision is advised?
Can you use slip roads?

Manoeuvres, can you do them all accurately, under control, with safe observations?
Signs and road markings, do you know them? Yeah youโ€™ve passed your theory test, but do you know how to take information from signs and road markings and let them influence your decision making when you are driving?

These are just a few of the essential requirements you need to be competent to enough pass your test.

Every day, instructors get calls from pupils asking if they will take them to test, because their instructors have let them down, this is not the case, the instructors know they are not ready, they refuse to take them!

YOUR TEST but itโ€™s OUR car and OUR reputation on the line!

This is not a way for instructors to get more money!

However long it takes you to learn to drive, itโ€™s difficult not to make comparisons to friends, but you are all individuals and all can develop skills differently. Time and practice is all it takes.

Massive congratulations to Adriana. FIRST TIME pass. Well done, you didnโ€™t let your nerves beat you. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ

Tackling the driving test waiting times with more test appointments

To help tackle the high driving test waiting times, DVSA is making around 150,000 additional test appointments available over the next 6 months. We are doing this by deploying more trained staff to carry out driving tests full time up to 31 March 2024.

Most people who are trained to do a driving test are driving examiners. However some staff who are trained have moved on to other roles in the agency, including as local driving test managers, operational managers and policy experts. Until now some of these individuals have been testing in addition to their usual job.

We are now asking them to do driving tests full-time, which will mean they are unable to do their usual roles. We will do all we can to limit the effect this has on the other services we offer.

How ADI testing and standards checks will be affected

During this time we will significantly reduce the number of standards checks and will continue to offer ADI part 2 and 3 tests. If we need to cancel or rearrange your standards check we will contact you.

We will continue to monitor driving test performance whilst prioritising car driving tests.

Putting the additional tests on the booking service

On Monday 2 October we will start to add these extra appointments to the booking service. This will cover test appointments for 6 October to 3 November.

It will take a few days for all the appointments to be added.

Then on 16 October, we will start to add appointments for 4 November to 18 November.

Again, it will take a few days for all the appointments to be added.

We'll repeat this every 2 weeks. For example, we'll add more appointments on 30 October, 13 November and so on.

We'll continue to do this until additional appointments are available up to 31 March 2024.

Making the most of the additional tests

Itโ€™s really important that we make every additional test count to work together to reduce the current high driving test waiting times.

We know that many of your pupils have been using the Ready to Pass? campaign resources to help prepare for their test โ€“ and found them really useful.

We also know that many of you have used the resources on the site to work with your pupils to make sure they only go for their test when they are ready to do so.

The campaign has been designed to support you and reinforce the messages you already give your pupils. You can visit the campaign website for 10 ways that you can help us spread the word.

Attention to all pupils of mine, please read the following from DVSA :-

Driving examiners to wear body worn
From today (25 January) driving examiners will begin to wear body worn cameras to help tackle an increase in abuse.

Weโ€™ve taken this decision due to an increase in unacceptable violent and abusive incidents against driving examiners since testing restarted after the pandemic restrictions.

Although the most recent figures show incidents of abuse have dropped since, they still remain on course to be higher than before the pandemic.

When the cameras will be used
The cameras will be an essential part of the uniform, for examinersโ€™ safety.

They will only be switched on if the examiner feels threatened or to capture inappropriate behaviour. The footage, where appropriate, will be used to prosecute offenders if abuse occurs.

The cameras cannot be used to dispute a candidateโ€™s test result.

Letting your pupils know
Please inform your pupils and candidates that they will start to see examiners wearing body cameras.

Please remind them of the serious consequences of abusing an examiner, which might include cancelled tests or even prosecution.

Body worn cameras are not new to DVSA, our enforcement examiners tackling road-side issues have worn them for several years.
