Nigel Sellars leaves us this summer after 10 years of dedicated leadership at Gosford Hill School. From the very beginning, he identified two clear priorities: to improve the quality of education for all young people at Gosford Hill and to better the environment in which they learn. Over the past decade, these priorities have remained at the heart of his leadership, helping to shape a school that is stronger, more ambitious and better equipped to serve its pupils and community.
One of the most visible aspects of this transformation has been the improvement of our school environment. From his earliest days, Mr Sellars worked alongside the Site Team and local employer Elsevier to redecorate and improve areas including the Dining Hall and Maths rooms. I have a particularly fond memory of coming into school during the summer of 2018 to find Nigel himself painting and refurbishing the school Reception, turning it into the welcoming space we know today, complete with plants and new lighting. His commitment to the environment in which our students learn also extended to the corridors, where he recognised the value of the displays I designed for him in creating a vibrant and inviting school. Mr Sellars’ determination to improve our facilities continued with the successful securing of a Conditional Improvement Fund grant in 2020, enabling essential roof replacements, followed by the relocation and refurbishment of the Sixth Form Centre in 2021 and further improvements to carpets, windows, doors and toilets in 2022.
Mr Sellars has also always recognised the value of working collaboratively and building strong relationships beyond the school gates. He led the process that saw Gosford Hill School join the River Learning Trust and, through an innovative agreement, enabled the Trust’s Central Team to be based on our school site. He developed strong links with local primary schools through regular meetings with Headteachers and supported partnerships with local organisations, including Oxford IT Solutions, a company led by a former Gosford Hill student. These relationships have strengthened our connections with other schools, local businesses and the wider community.
Perhaps Mr Sellars’ greatest test of leadership came during the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. He navigated the school through lockdowns and the transition to remote learning, ensuring that students continued to receive education and pastoral support, while embracing technology to keep our community connected. On our return to school, he oversaw the introduction of year-group bubbles, one-way systems and a volunteer-supported Covid testing centre, helping to keep staff and students safe.
Over his decade as Headteacher, he led the school through three Ofsted inspections, including an official ‘Good’ rating in March 2022 – validating six years of relentless focus on teaching quality, student behaviour, and school culture. Then, in October 2023, Mr Sellars successfully secured the school’s place in Phase 3 of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme, making Gosford Hill the first school in Oxfordshire to be selected, an achievement that will shape our school for generations to come.
Mr Sellars has always understood the importance of Gosford Hill’s place within the wider Kidlington community, coordinating our 85th and 90th anniversary celebrations and helping to organise our ‘Memories Festival’ where we welcomed over 1,000 people to say a final farewell to our existing school buildings. He has championed connections with former students through our alumni community and supported initiatives such as ‘Bring a Grown Up!’ Family Learning Workshops, ‘Parents CAN’ sessions and our Festive Afternoon Tea for elderly residents. He also launched The Gosford Times (Community Edition) to keep local residents, alumni and businesses connected with the school. As a music teacher, Nigel has been particularly passionate about bringing people together through music, performing alongside the Gosford Hill Soul Band at community events, care homes, garden centres and local primary schools, as well as school productions – culminating in the very special opportunity to perform in front of Their Majesties the King and Queen at the opening of the new Schwarzman Centre in July this year.
Gosford Hill has always been a school where people care deeply about young people and about one another, and it is this strong sense of community that sets us apart. As a former Gosford Hill student myself, I know personally what it means to be part of that community. Almost 10 years ago, having recently graduated, I was given the opportunity to return to the school and begin my career here – a chance for which I will always be grateful. Next year, I will celebrate my own 10th year at Gosford Hill, and it is a privilege to have spent much of that time working under Nigel’s leadership. My experience is far from unique; many former students return to work here, drawn back by the same passion for supporting the next generation and serving our local community. Nigel’s patience, kindness and excellent communication have been central to his exceptional leadership, and he will be greatly missed by many. His 10 years have been defined by resilience and transformation: he guided the school through national challenges, raised standards, strengthened our community and, most significantly, secured a new school for Kidlington – a lasting legacy for generations to come. As Gosford Hill School enters its next chapter, the school will inevitably change, but its place at the heart of Kidlington will remain. We each have a part to play in caring for this special community, and we can be grateful that Nigel has helped secure its future. We wish him every happiness and success for his next chapter.
