The Early Years Nursery - Kidlington

The Early Years Nursery - Kidlington Unique all year round childcare for children. For this reason we will first listen rather than talk. (1993).

We focus on children's emotional wellbeing, give them time for uninterrupted play and exploration and offer plenty of opportunities for free self-directed movement. Our Pedagogical Dimension
Relations, communications and concepts such as subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, are the very core of our pedagogy. It is the child’s expression and through it the child’s mediation of knowledge and experi

ence, that becomes the focus of interest when planning for the learning environment. Our nursery space enables a continuous process where the child raises questions and constructs theories and meaning in an interplay with the surrounding world. The reciprocity of the interaction between the child, her peers and adults is important for the child’s creation of identity and understanding of the surrounding world. As children represent their mental images to others, they represent them to themselves, developing a more conscious vision (interior listening). This interior listening is enhanced through an environment that lends itself to the exterior representation of symbols and images. Thus, moving from one language to another, from one field of experience to another, and reflecting on these shifts and those of others, children modify and enrich their theories and conceptual maps of the world (Edwards et al. But this is true if, and only if, children have the opportunity to make these shifts in a group context—that is, in and with others—and if they have the possibility to listen and be listened to, to express their differences and be receptive to the differences of others. With these goals in mind, distinct pedagogical features have emerged in our approach. These include an emphasis on expression and children’s utilisation of multiple symbolic languages; the development of long-term projects as contexts for children’s and teachers’ learning and research; and careful attention to the role of the environment as it supports relationships among the three protagonists—teacher, parent and child in one special place called The Early Years Nursery.

Children deserve encounters with ideas that honour the richness and complexity of the world. Our role is not to simplify that complexity into themed activities, but to accompany children as they build increasingly sophisticated theories through observation, dialogue, and sustained inquiry. Materials support thinking, but they are never a substitute for it. The quality of an educational experience is determined not by how closely the resources resemble the topic, but by the depth of thinking they make possible.

Winter Hold

Winter folds the nursery tight,
Tucks it in with early night.
Doors are closed, the kettle still,
Frost rests soft upon the sill.

Wooden floors remember feet,
Tiny paths where heartbeats meet.
Tables keep each handprint warm,
Pressed like seeds before the storm.

Stories sleep in wool and pine,
Curled in hush and evergreen time.
Toys lie low, their journeys done,
Dreaming of the coming sun.

Every laugh from days gone by
Drifts like breath in winter sky.
Nothing lost and nothing gone,
Only resting, moving on.

Like little figures laid to dream,
Wrapped in green and quiet gleam,
The nursery breathes slow and deep,
Held in trust, allowed to sleep.

This year hums in gentle rhyme,
Echoed through the wood and time.
Footsteps fade but do not cease
They wait in winter’s patient peace.

For soon the thaw will knock the door,
And echoes wake the rooms once more.
Steps turn light and voices rise,
Spring held bright in laughing eyes.

Hand-led care and hearts made wide,
Little ones at home inside.
Till then the circle holds its grace
Winter keeps this sacred space.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Dr. Anna Tardos’s passing.

The daughter of Dr. Emmi Pikler, Anna devoted her life to advancing her mother’s pioneering work in respectful and attuned early childhood care and education.

As a revered child psychologist, researcher, educator, and longtime director of the Pikler Institute in Budapest, she dedicated more than six decades to advancing and sharing this pioneering work.

Some of our team had the privilege of being trained and inspired by her, and her influence continues to guide our Piklerian practice every day. Anna’s influence has been far-reaching. Her wisdom and guidance have shaped early childhood practice around the world. Her legacy will continue to live on in the care and respect she inspired in so many of us.

Our thoughts are with her family, colleagues at the Pikler Institute, and all who were touched by her remarkable work and kindness around the world.

🌿✨ I’m so honoured to be speaking at Nursery World’s Big Day Out, 2025.

This isn’t just a chance to share what we do every day—it’s an opportunity to bring attention to something quietly powerful: the work of Emmi Pikler, and her deep respect for children’s natural development.

In a world that often rushes childhood, Pikler reminded us to slow down.
To support free uninterrupted motor development
Play that is uninterrupted.
Care that is gentle, respectful, and deeply attuned.

This isn’t just about preparing children for the next stage of education. It’s about nurturing confidence, resilience, and self-trust—from the inside out.

I can’t wait to be part of this inspiring event, surrounded by people who believe in the kind of care that honours the wisdom already alive in every child.

Let’s keep protecting it. 🌱

Enjoying the good weather and the sun 🌞 in our garden

Respecting a child means treating them as a unique human being not as an object.

🧦🧦

Socks everywhere, mismatched socks, and socks that can't find their owner. All those socks that remain in our school as witnesses to childhood stories.

If children ever go home without their socks, don't worry! It’s a sign that their feet have been connecting with their human nature and have been barefoot, taking advantage of all the benefits that running, walking, jumping, and crawling offer.

A barefoot is a healthy foot that has sensations and that offers real information about surfaces.

Ready to discover the world 🌎

Babies love being inside small spaces that make them feel cozy and protected.
The reason is that it reminds them of the mother's womb where they've been for 9 months.
They like to remember with their bodies what was once their home.

This is our Pikler cube, separated from the tunnel Pikler to give it another function and other opportunities to discover.

Babies on the floor!

The floor is the safest place where babies can begin to recognize themselves, develop their muscles, their sense of balance, and body awareness

The floor offers wonderful opportunities for babies to roll over, sit up by themselves, or stand up.

In our nursery we don't have any devices that restrict movement because we firmly believe in the babies' ability to conquer their own motor development.
