🚨 THE AYA PARENTS’ SERIES IS BACK!

Raising Awareness of Drugs, Gangs, County Lines and Knife Crime

African Youth Arise (AYA) is proud to support the launch of The Street Clinic, hosted by the NHS London Violence Reduction Academy.

As the summer holidays begin, we must recognise that some children and young people may be at increased risk of grooming, criminal exploitation, gang involvement, drug-related activity and knife crime. It is essential that parents and carers remain ALERT, understand the warning signs, and create safe spaces for open conversations with their children.

📚 The Street Clinic Book Launch with Zimbabwean author Dorcas Gwata

Join us online for an important discussion with award-winning Zimbabwean author and mental health nurse Dorcas Gwata. Her book The Street Clinic, featured on BBC Radio 4 as Book of the Week, highlights the realities faced by vulnerable young people in London.

With over 25 years of NHS frontline experience, Dorcas shares her work supporting young people affected by knife crime, gang violence, sexual exploitation, drug use and poor mental health, delivering care directly within communities and on the streets.

We will also hear from Nashe, who will share lived experience of navigating healthcare services as a young person impacted by violence.

This is a vital conversation for parents, families and the African community. Together we will explore:

• Drivers of youth violence
• How young people are drawn into gangs and county lines
• The impact of exploitation on mental health
• Warning signs for parents and carers
• Effects on families and communities
• How we can better protect and support young people

We took our young leaders on our annual residential trip.

On the surface, it was about workshops and adventure activities.

But in reality? It was about something far more significant: Belonging.

For many of these young people, this was the first time they felt completely "seen."

This trip was a reminder that investing in youth isn't just about providing resources; it’s about providing space. Space to fail safely. Space to ask difficult questions. Space to dream out loud.

To our facilitators, mentors, and donors: You didn't just fund a trip; you funded a transformation. You gave these young minds the confidence to believe that their voice matters.

For the second year running, African Youth Arise has been proud to be a delivery partner on the University of Northampton's STEAM Project, helping inspire young people across Northamptonshire through engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Throughout the project, we delivered a range of interactive workshops that introduced young people to STEM careers while celebrating culture, creativity and personal development. From African drumming to financial education and career inspiration, every session was designed to build confidence, spark curiosity and broaden aspirations.

A huge thank you to our fantastic community partners who helped bring these experiences to life, including Sisters in Construction for inspiring young women to explore careers in construction, and Family Harvest Finance for equipping young people with valuable money management skills.

We're grateful to the University of Northampton, the schools and every young person who took part. Together, we're creating opportunities that empower the next generation to dream bigger and achieve more.
