Millbrook Junior School

Year 5 have had a fantastic two days at the Botanic Garden at the University of Leicester! They enjoyed pond dipping, making clay seeds, exploring the different parts of plants, identifying trees, and taking part in a classification bingo challenge. A wonderful hands-on learning experience with lots of scientific discovery and outdoor fun!

Our Year 6 pupil recently took part in the British Gymnastics National Finals for East Midlands.

She also came 3rd in the county on Beam.

The East Midlands team won the Bronze British medal - 3rd in the county on the excel grade which is the highest grade in the sport.

In French, Year 4 have been learning how to say different foods and the names of shops in French. The children enjoyed creating a French shop triarama.

Year 5 enjoyed welcoming Mrs Elijah this afternoon to hear about her experiences of Judaism. The children asked some excellent questions and engaged thoughtfully with everything she shared.

We are pleased to report that all of our growing projects are doing well this term. Mrs Prentice has been working with some children to plant and grow a variety of fruit and vegetables. As you can see, the strawberries are almost ready to eat. The ECO committee's potatoes are approaching harvest time and the Year 5 plants have grown well.

Congratulations to our Year 5 pupil who has not only achieved her 2 million words but 3 million words too.

Well done to two of our Year 5 pupils who took part in a football tournament and were awarded a medal and a trophy for their contributions to the match.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Winston Powell to our school, and we were absolutely amazed!
Winston wowed us with an incredible display of gymnastics skills, including backflips, splits, L-sits, and even handstand walks. 🤸‍♂️👏
Beyond the impressive demonstrations, Winston shared his personal journey, speaking honestly about the challenges he has faced and how determination, resilience, and hard work helped him overcome them.
His message to our pupils was clear and powerful: keep taking part in the sports and activities you love, and never give up. Learning new skills takes time, patience, and perseverance, but with dedication, you can achieve amazing things!

This week, our ECO Team welcomed visitors from the charity SolarAid, in partnership with local company RS Components, for an interactive session about access to electricity and the power of solar energy.

Students learned how SolarAid is helping transform lives across sub-Saharan Africa by bringing clean, safe solar lighting to communities without electricity.

Through discussion, role play, and hands-on activities, students explored:
what life can be like without electricity the challenges families face after dark
how solar power works and the positive impact SolarAid is making in communities across Malawi and Zambia

One of the ECO team reflected afterwards: “We found out that 600 million people in Africa are living without electricity. In the evening they have no light to work by or to charge their phones. They use a solar panel that charges during the day and gives power at night.”

It was wonderful to see our students so engaged, thoughtful, and curious throughout the session, asking brilliant questions and showing real empathy and understanding.

Students were also excited to receive badges and keyrings following the session and are looking forward to sharing what they learned with the rest of the school community.
