If someone opens up to you about their mental health, active listening can help them feel supported.

Active listening involves:
Patience, letting the speaker get to their point at their own speed.
Don’t interrupt, you’re here to listen to what they have to say.
If you can, match the pace and tone of the conversation to show empathy.
Paraphrase what they have said, to make sure they feel heard.
Don’t make assumptions, just take in what you’re being told.
Don’t overthink the situation, you are here as a sounding board, not to provide a solution.
If you feel that the person who is speaking to you is in danger, call 999 or 111 for emergency support.

If you feel that you’re not able to provide the support they need, there are a number of phone lines which offer mental health assistance:
Samaritans:
116 123
National Su***de Helpline UK:
0800 587 0800
Men’s Domestic Abuse Helpline:
0808 8010327
Mind:
0300 102 1234

Fewer high-pressure exams. More focus on preparing young people for life beyond school. Less anxiety, fear, burnout and overwhelm. More space for joy. More freedom to explore and make mistakes. More room for mental health and wellbeing.

The education system puts too much focus on exam results. And it's created a toxic culture of stress and anxiety for young people.

Talent and success aren't just reflected through exams. They can show up and be expressed in so many different ways.

Numbers on a piece of paper will never define a young person's worth or potential. And our education system should reflect that.
