Threshold — out now.

Threshold is a collection of music originally composed for Behind the Lens, a theatre piece commissioned by Welcome House and created with Falling Stars Theatre.

Behind the Lens explores the human stories behind migration, asylum and sanctuary, drawing on the experiences and histories of people who have arrived in Hull from different parts of the world.

The music moves between electronic textures, processed sound, strings, piano and found audio. Three short pieces — Trace I–III — use fragments of speech, environmental recordings and material from elsewhere in the score, reflecting the way sounds, places and memories recur and change.

The EP is available on a pay-what-you-feel basis, with all net proceeds donated to Welcome House Hull, supporting refugees and people seeking asylum in Hull and East Yorkshire.

Over the last month I’ve been working with Beccy and Falling Stars Theatre, devising and creating the music for their new production, Behind the Lens.

A lot of the music started in the rehearsal room: improvising, responding to the writing and performers, trying things out with Beccy, and then taking those ideas away and developing them into the finished score.

It’s been a really enjoyable way to work, and I’m pleased with where the music has ended up. I’ve decided to release a selection of it as an EP under my own name.

Threshold: Music From Behind the Lens will be released this Friday on Bandcamp.

I'm really pleased to be able to share this...

I had the pleasure of co-creating this resource pack for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, and it's now available as a free download.

The Sound of Bradford explores place through music, field recording and sound, taking inspiration from Opera North's Earth & Sky project. The activities are designed for secondary schools, home educators and community settings, and can be used by both music specialists and non-specialists.

A brilliant day with the Bradford Artsmark Network at Titus Salt School.

It was great to see teachers sharing so much good practice from their schools — from celebrating Artsmark successes and discussing how to embed creativity more consistently, to exploring ideas for trips, partnerships, arts penpals and ways to support each other across the network.

We also had an exciting session learning more about Bradford Made and the new local stories packs for learners, with the chance to feed back on what schools in the network would really value and need.

A huge thank you as well to Issy from Into Film for a really informative and inspiring filmmaking session. It was a brilliant way to end the day, with everyone leaving having made a film and with practical skills to share with colleagues and students.

Big thanks to Amy and everyone at Titus Salt School for hosting us so warmly.

A really positive, practical and creative day.

First independent Music CPD event completed.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, contributed so openly, and helped shape the discussion. It was great to spend the day with music teachers looking carefully at delivery, assessment and how we can support students to produce their best work.

The aim was always for this to be practical, honest and useful rather than just another slide deck, so I’m really grateful to everyone who shared questions, examples and ideas throughout the session.

Off the back of this CPD, I’ll also be developing more resources and support materials, which I’ll make available soon.

This was the first Music CPD event I’ve run independently, and I’ve come away with plenty to reflect on and develop for future sessions.

Bank holiday booking update

All three BTEC Tech Award in Music Practice CPD days are now confirmed and going ahead:

✅ Leeds – 22 June — 5 places left
✅ Birmingham – 6 July — 6 places left
✅ London – 13 July — confirmed

The early bird rate was due to end on Friday, but as schools have been closed over the bank holiday, I’m keeping the reduced £175 rate open until the end of Tuesday for anyone booking through a school PO / invoice process.

After that, the price will move to £195.

Quick CPD update (final decisions coming)

Now we’re into the first week back, I just wanted to give a clear update as I start locking things in:

⚠️ Birmingham (6 July) — 1 more booking needed to run
⚠️ London (13 July) — 1 more booking needed to run
❌ Manchester (10 July) — won’t be going ahead this time

Thanks again to everyone who’s booked so far — really appreciate it. I’ll be making final decisions on Birmingham and London very soon.

I know how busy this first week back is, and also that for some of you, moderation outcomes have felt a bit… unclear at times. These sessions are very much about making the standard feel clearer, more consistent, and easier to apply in practice.
