🚀🌍 This Week at Snug Bugs Nursery 🌍🚀

What an out-of-this-world week we have had at Snug Bugs as we continued our exciting journey through space and the planets! 🌌✨

This week we focused on the fascinating ice planets at the edge of our solar system and discovered lots of amazing facts along the way. The children especially loved learning that Saturn could float in water… if you could find a body of water big enough! 🪐💦 We explored the planets’ colours, sizes and positions in the solar system while encouraging lots of discussion, questioning and curiosity.

Our tuff trays have been full of exciting sensory experiences throughout the week. The children loved exploring a shaving foam rocket activity with numbered rockets, as well as getting hands-on with our rice planet tray, encouraging sensory exploration and imaginative play. 🚀🌈

To support fine motor development, the children enjoyed threading pasta onto shooting star pipe cleaners, carefully matching the correct number of pasta pieces to the numeral on each star. We also explored threading activities around the planets themselves, helping to strengthen the children’s hand muscles while learning more about each planet’s unique features. 🌟

The children have shown a huge interest in finding out more about life in space, so we used non-fiction books to deepen our learning and spark further discussions. We even watched short clips showing how astronauts wash their hair, brush their teeth and use the toilet in space — which definitely created lots of giggles and fascinated faces! 🚀🧑‍🚀📚

Friday brought even more excitement as we launched our air-propelled rocket outside! Before taking turns launching it, we revisited the scientific word “hypothesis” and talked about making predictions about what might happen. The children confidently discussed what could affect the rocket’s speed and height, including how hard we stomped and how much air was used. There were so many squeals of excitement as we watched the rocket shoot high into the sky! 🚀💨

In phonics this week, we have continued recapping the sounds s, a, t, p, i and n. The children have been working incredibly hard recognising sounds, joining in with activities and growing in confidence each day. Su has been so proud and impressed with how brilliantly the children are progressing! ⭐👏

It has been such a wonderful week full of curiosity, imagination, scientific thinking and hands-on learning. We cannot wait to continue our space adventures next week! 🌌🪐✨

This week, our little learners have blasted off into the fascinating world of SPACE 🌍⭐, discovering amazing facts about the planets Mars and Jupiter while taking part in a wide range of exciting, hands-on learning experiences. The children were especially amazed to learn that Jupiter is a gas giant and so huge that all of the other planets in our solar system could fit inside it! This sparked lots of thoughtful questions, discussions and imaginative conversations as the children shared their own ideas and knowledge about space.

During our morning chats and group discussions, the children explored non-fiction books, solar system models and exciting space facts, helping to develop their understanding of the world and encouraging curiosity about the universe around them. We introduced new vocabulary such as “orbit” 🌎☀️ as the children learned how planets travel in circles around the sun, and “hypothesis” 🧪🔬 during our science experiments when the children made predictions about what they thought might happen.

One of the highlights of the week was definitely our exciting science investigations! The children became mini scientists as we experimented with Coca-Cola and Mentos 💥🥤 as well as vinegar and bicarbonate reactions. There was lots of excitement, anticipation and laughter as the children counted down together and observed the fizzy bubbling reactions. These activities encouraged the children to think critically, make predictions, observe changes and understand that experiments do not always turn out exactly as expected — just like real scientists!

Our learning environment has been transformed into a space-themed adventure zone filled with opportunities for imaginative play and exploration. The children have enjoyed:

🌌 Exploring sensory tuff trays with shaving foam, kinetic sand, fizzy space rocks and foil planets
🚀 Building rockets using play mags, blocks and construction materials
🎨 Designing and creating their own planets, stars and space pictures using a variety of materials and textures

🪐 Counting, sorting and comparing “space rocks” while developing mathematical language such as “bigger,” “smaller,” “more” and “less”
💧 Exploring pouring, mixing and role play through our “space tea party” activities
🎵 Joining in with space songs, parachute games and phonics sessions with great enthusiasm

In phonics, the children focused on the letter sound “n” and showed fantastic confidence identifying initial sounds in words through games, songs and interactive activities. It has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and enthusiasm for early reading and communication activities.

Throughout the week, the children have demonstrated wonderful teamwork, creativity, resilience and curiosity. They have worked collaboratively to solve problems, shared ideas with their friends and embraced every activity with excitement and imagination. The week has been filled with meaningful learning opportunities across all areas of the EYFS, all through play, exploration and discovery. 🌟

We are so proud of our amazing little astronauts and all the enthusiasm they have shown during our space adventures this week! 🌍🚀✨
