💩🐴 IT’S WORM COUNT TIME AT TEAL! 🐴💩
It might not be the most glamorous part of horse care… but it’s definitely an important one! 😂
Our students have been getting hands-on with collecting poo samples from the horses ready for their regular faecal worm egg counts — another great example of how we turn everyday horse care into practical, meaningful learning.
And the results are back! 🎉
🐴 Smokey — 0 epg
🐴 Ben — 125 epg
🐴 Sam — 25 epg
🐴 Jigsaw — 100 epg
All four are below the laboratory’s treatment threshold of 250 epg, so no worming treatment is needed for redworm/strongyles based on these results. 💚
🌱 Prevention is part of our everyday routine too!
Our paddocks and grazing areas are poo-picked daily, helping to reduce pasture contamination and the risk of parasite burdens. Our students are involved in this too, learning that good horse care isn’t just about the big jobs — it’s the everyday management that makes a difference.
By combining daily poo picking, regular worm egg counts and targeted treatment when needed, we can make informed decisions about parasite control and avoid giving wormers unnecessarily. 🐴🌿
And for our students, even collecting poo has a learning outcome! 😂💩
It creates opportunities to learn about horse health, parasite management, responsible horse ownership, hygiene, record keeping, pasture management and preventative care — all alongside the practical skills involved in caring for a herd.
The lab recommends repeating their worm counts every two months, so no doubt our students will be absolutely delighted to hear that the poo collecting will return! 😂💩
At TEAL, learning doesn’t always happen sitting behind a desk — sometimes it happens with a poo scoop in your hand! 😂🐴💚
