Spring is such a magical time of year! Our current topic explores the wonder of new life in spring, and at last we were able to leave the classroom behind for a truly special outdoor observation lesson!

What an exciting day it was! We spotted geese with their fluffy goslings, sheep with their playful lambs, as well as cows, chickens, horses, ducks and tiny ducklings. We even noticed a crow busily carrying a beak full of worms, and the farm’s hardworking sheepdog keeping watch nearby.

With the sunshine on our faces and so much to discover, the children gained a rich, first-hand experience of springtime in the town. These moments will inspire them over the next two weeks as they begin creating their very own Chinese story collage books.

Soon, we’ll be back in the classroom, turning these observations into stories. Our upcoming book is titled:

Celebrating new life in the Spring 🌼🌱🌹 starting next week, Bing’s Mandarin Club will be on a two-week break. We wish all students and their families a happy and enjoyable Easter holiday!

To celebrate the arrival of spring, Bing’s Mandarin Club is preparing a small project. It will also be my first attempt to weave contextual learning into a more traditional classroom setting.

✨ Contextual Learning
Just imagine: ducklings in a spring pond, little animals playing in the woods, new life arriving on the farm… Within these familiar scenes, language gradually becomes more concrete and meaningful.

✨ Learning Through Tasks
Alongside learning new words and sentence patterns, the children will try a range of small tasks: observing real-life scenes, sequencing pictures, telling stories, and creating their own Chinese “sticker books” with simple captions. Through hands-on activities, they can learn at their own pace and build a quiet sense of achievement.

We’re simply hoping for some lovely spring weather, so that I might occasionally take the children out into the fields and woods to experience the spring in our beautiful town！

Wishing all the wonderful mums a very Happy Mother’s Day! 🌸

In the Beginner class, the children learnt how to say in Chinese, “Mummy, I love you” and “You’re the best mum.”

In the Intermediate class, over the past two weeks, the children explored ideas and found creative inspiration from the picture book My Mum by British author Anthony Browne. They even wrote short poems about their own mums using some key sentence patterns:

someone + is a + n. （是+一个+名词）
someone + is an + adj + n. （是+一个+形容词+名词）
someone + as + adj.+as + a +n. (像+名词+一样+形容词）

This week we learned about family. We learned the names of family members, how to introduce our own family, and how to express our love to them. This Sunday is Mother’s Day— how about to make a special Chinese card for your mum!

Chinese New Year is just around the corner! 🎉 As usual, we explored the topic of the Chinese Zodiac — but this year, we decided to do something a bit different!

After learning the Chinese names of the zodiac animals, along with related verbs and adjectives, children worked together to create a BRAND NEW VERSION of Chinese zodiac story to celebrate the New Year this year. The in-class discussions were so lively and enthusiastic today, with everyone using their creativity to co-create a story. From the photos, you can get a little sneak peek at how our Chinese story-making is coming along. We’re hoping the children will be able to perform their own stories soon, exciting things to come!

Hello 2026! My Christmas and New Year break has been pretty busy as a Mandarin teacher. Besides preparing exam papers, I’m also getting a performance ready for our school’s Spring Festival Gala in February.

How do you get teenage learners interested in learning Chinese? Over the past few weeks, my class and I created a short, funny skit together—based on our course content and current hot topics. From brainstorming ideas and choosing a theme to polishing the script, casting roles, and even handling props, stage setup, and video editing, the kids did it all!

These teens may look cool and quiet sometimes, but once their creativity and humor are switched on, they’re surprisingly enthusiastic. Our Sunday classes now include both Mandarin lessons and skit rehearsals—busy, fun, and very rewarding! I even had a video conference with my talented student after class to work on animations and sound effects.

No matter how the final performance turns out, as long as the kids enjoy the process, it's what language learning should be about, isn't it?—learning through fun 🎭📚.
