Does the Declaration of Independence still matter?

As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, Cambridge historians reflect on one of the most influential documents ever written – and how it has been reinterpreted, contested, and reclaimed.

Professor Nicholas Guyatt discusses the legendary phrase “all men are created equal”, while Professor Mia Bay looks at how Black Americans used this language to expose the contradiction between liberty and slavery.

Professor Kasia Boddy shows how American writers from John Updike to Alice Walker use the Declaration as a literary touchstone.

Dr Caroline Johnson points out that it continues to remind people that “new visions of freedom are possible”.

The academics have launched the Centre for the United States of America at Cambridge (CUSAC), building on the University's strength as one of the world's leading centres for the study of the US outside of the country itself.
