Le Petit Poisson - Tuition for All Ages (French, German & 11+)

Le Petit Poisson - Tuition for All Ages (French, German & 11+) Le Petit Poisson I am quite simply passionate about teaching French to all age ranges, from pre-schoolers to primary and secondary and also adults.

I am hard-working and enthusiastic tutor and offer a fresh and youthful approach to teaching, which ultimately allows my students to achieve their goals in a fun and dynamic way. I am also fairly uniquely placed to offer GCSE French courses to home-schooled children and have great experience in this sector. In addition, I provide structured, tailor-made classes for Common Entrance/11+ students in

French, and I have a 100% success rate in getting my students into the top independent/state schools in the area. I also hold an Enhanced Disclosure CRB Check for your peace of mind that I am happy to show on request. If you are interested in brushing up on your French, perhaps for a holiday or for business reasons, in the comfort of your own home, either as an individual or in a group, then please do contact me. I am most happy to provide you with references so you can be confident in the knowledge that I am committed to facilitating your requirements for French. I am also able to offer 11+ tuition in maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and also in German. If you are looking for a tutor who will motivate and encourage your child to reach their very best potential, then I look forward to hearing from you. I also sell educational maths and english books and games for children of primary school age. Kind regards

Amanda Gillett

I have just 1 space left for both of my May Revision Courses now, so if you've been meaning to book your child's place or would like any further details please do get in touch!

I’ve had such a great time helping local Year 5 children with their 11+ prep over the past few days. The feedback from my Easter Mocks has been so wonderful and it looks like both children and parents have found the advice and targeted feedback incredibly useful!

If you’d like to book your child onto either of my May or August 2 day Revision courses (including a set of Mock Tests), then please do get in touch!

Tuesday 26th & Wednesday 27th May (in Half Term)
Thursday 28th & Friday 29th May (in Half Term)
Monday 10th & Tuesday 11th August (Summer Holidays)
Monday 17th & Tuesday 18th August (Summer Holidays)

I have only a few places left on these courses now. All are identical, so you only need to book onto one!

These courses are literally crammed full of hints and tips and revision practise to help your child fulfil their potential in the exam and they’ll love the fact that my helpers have all taken the 11+ themselves, so they’ll be able to learn so much from them whilst genuinely having great fun and making friends.

Many parents don’t believe me when I say that I run a really fun as well as educational course, but when they see their beaming faces at the end of the day, they’re amazed 😉. I do appreciate that 11+ prep isn’t always the most exciting of activities for them, but I do my utmost to ensure they get the most out of the experience!

Please do get in contact for more information or to book your child’s place! I take pride in the fact that my prices have remained the same for a number of years now, as I’m fully aware that in the current climate, you are investing in me to help support your child and enrich their learning.

Lastly, I do have a few limited slots available over the Summer for one-to-one online tuition, so please do get in touch if this is also of interest.

Do you have a Year 11 son/daughter taking GCSE French this Summer? Are they getting a little concerned about their French Speaking exam and could do with a couple of sessions over the Easter Holidays to brush up on their technique, pronunciation and ultimately confidence?

The Speaking Test does tend to get a bit overlooked despite being 25% of their overall mark - especially when there are so many other subjects to juggle. It's all about not leaving it too late to get practising, and ensuring they go into the exam room with belief and confidence in their ability. If I can give them one free tip for now, then it would be VOCAB, VOCAB and more VOCAB learning now will make life a lot easier in a few months, not just in the speaking discipline but all areas of the exam.

I've been helping local students with their GCSE French exams for over 30 years now, and despite being fully booked for my term time online lessons, I do have a few days with online lesson availability during the Easter break (perfect for slotting into their revision timetable), so please do get in touch ([email protected]) if this might be of interest or for more information.

Many thanks as always for supporting this local business!

One to One Versus Group 11+ tuition? Which is better?

This is a question I'm often asked. Should I be looking for one to one tuition for my child or would I be better off going for group tuition?

There seems to have been a huge influx of tutors offering group tuition. Many local tutors charge upwards of £25 per hour for around 4-6 tutees in their group - and to be perfectly honest, I think this must suit certain tutors down to the ground when they need to make a profit once they have covered their financial overheads of hiring out a hall etc. It must be a nice little earner for them! They also tend to follow each of the disciplines in a prescribed way each week to ensure all bases are covered, with no room to go 'off piste' should a child need more personalised support. There simply isn't time to focus in on the individual with group tuition. In these little academic groups, it is virtually impossible to put children with similar academic ability together - and with this sadly comes numerous issues.

Many children feel unable to match the high standards of the others. Very few feel brave enough in a group setting to advocate for themselves when they don't understand a concept or might just quite rightly need a second explanation. This is often covered up by giving the child (no, I'm really not joking!) an extra 2 hours worth of homework worksheets per week to trawl through, all hugely excessive and frankly in my opinion completely unnecessary! I have absolutely no idea what these tutors think taking this approach will do, apart from frankly taking the fun out of the process and very worryingly potentially setting the child up for anxiety issues in the future. NO child should be doing homework sheets of this nature and quantity in Year 5, even if they have their hearts set on the superselectives!!

I really do think it pays to find someone who can really get to know your child, who can really work out their strengths and weaknesses and help them to work through those weaknesses, but who will also be completely honest with you if they don't think they will cope with the 11+. I know that the last thing I would want you to do is financially commit to something that just isn't right for your child.

Group tuition may well appear to be the more cost effective option, but in the long run, from my many years of experience devoting myself to one to one tuition, I feel strongly that your child will get a much better experience in the long run and provide far less stress for your child if you go for the individualised approach.

I do very unexpectedly have a slot available for my online one to one tuition on Monday mornings before school from January onwards (the hourly lesson can start anytime from 6.45am to 7.45am to suit your school run - most choose a 7.15/7.30am start time) and is a very popular slot as it means they can still continue to do all their usual extra curricular activities, go on playdates, without inconveniencing their usual routine.

If this is of interest to you, then please do get in touch for more information as I don't expect this slot to be available for very long :-)

In the last couple of days, I find myself very unexpectedly with an online 11+ tuition slot on a Monday morning before school, perfect for children who have lots of extra curricular activities and a very popular slot!

The hourly online lessons can start anytime from 6.45am through to 7.45am to suit your school run.

I don't expect this slot to remain available for very long, so please do DM me for further information. Many thanks!
