Pre LBC Support: The child exhibited indications of ‘ODD’ or ‘Oppositional Defiant Disorder’. He was unable to follow clear instructions or interact somewhat appropriately with both peers and adults. In addition to this, the child had difficulties in verbalising his inner emotion. These barriers stemmed from his upbringing
in a dysfunctional family environment and what can be identified as a non idealistic home setting for a child to positively derive in. When assessed, he displayed ‘abnormal’ behaviour in areas of conduct, emotional symptoms and peer problems. Academically, he was making slow progress and working three sublevels below his age related expectation. Support delivered by LBC: Interventions initially began with targeting basic listening and attention skills and then progressed onto exploring empathy. With this, LBC, identified and managed the inner emotion that the child could not previously verbalise. This was carried out with the use of puppets, songs, games, group work, role play, Art and problem solving. Throughout the intervention programme there had been ongoing dialogues with both staff and parents. This involved feedback from sessions with the incorporation of strategies and activities to be carried out at home and in school. Post LBC Support: A clear and replenished improvement has been observed by those involved with the child. With the support of LBC the child is now able to follow instructions and is more confident in asking when he requires clarification with any personal confusion. His group of peers has expanded and he is interacting with differing groups of children, as he is more aware of how his actions have consequences. When assessed in post intervention, he displayed ‘normal’ behaviour in the areas of conduct, emotional symptoms and peer problems. Due to the frequency and intensity of support, he has made accelerated progress academically. This has resulted in him closing the gap in a short amount of time. He is now working one sublevel below his age related expectation. The support of LBC has also had a wider impact, as the strategies are now being utilised with the whole class.
