BREAKING: the Department of Health have announced that gay and bis*xual men will be able to donate blood after a significantly reduced deferral period: three months since s*x, not a year.

"We warmly welcome these changes to the blood donation rules which use scientific evidence to reduce the restrictions on who can donate. We strongly believe that to ensure the largest possible safe blood supply, blood donation rules must be based on the latest scientific evidence, rather than prejudice.

“It’s a huge advance for gay and bis*xual men to now be able to donate three months from their last s*xual activity. We are also delighted that NHS Blood and Transplant have said they will now investigate how possible it is for some gay men, depending on degree of risk, to donate without even the three-month deferral.

“As important is the end to the permanent exclusion of s*x workers from blood donation - such a permanent refusal was prejudice, not science, and we are pleased to see a reform for which we have campaigned for many years.

“The recommendation to end the discriminatory exclusion from blood donation for people who have ever injected drugs must be brought in as soon as possible. We urge the Department of Health to act fast to make the necessary legislative changes so that new rules that apply here, and to activities such as tattooing, acupuncture and body piercing, can be implemented. The new recommendations are based on evidence and to not implement them is to maintain a discriminatory practice.”

BREAKING: Wales announces it *WILL* fund a widescale PrEP trial to prevent HIV.

The Welsh Government has today announced a trial for people at risk of HIV in Wales. We welcome this as a ‘momentous’ step forward for tackling the HIV epidemic.

“We are heartened and relieved that the Welsh government have listened to people affected by HIV, and will make PrEP available to people who need it in Wales, through a three year trial,” says Sarah Fuhrmann, National Director for Terrence Higgins Trust in Wales.

“Although this is not a long-term solution, it is undoubtedly a momentous step forward for Wales, where investment in HIV prevention has been patchy at best. Making PrEP available to people at risk of HIV will not only protect them from a lifelong and stigmatised condition, it will also save our NHS £360,000 in lifetime treatment costs for every person who would have become HIV positive without PrEP. Common sense has prevailed.

“A trial is only ever a temporary answer, however, and we will be looking to the government to commit to making PrEP routinely available in Wales for those at risk, as Scotland has already done. We must not see the same delays or uncertainty that we’ve seen in England around PrEP.

“Nevertheless this is a welcome step and we hope the trial paves the way for a long-term home for PrEP on the NHS in Wales.”
