Research led by a Keele University professor has played a key role in the development of a new policy briefing on early intervention in psychosis care.

The policy briefing, published by Centre for Mental Health, outlines recommendations for the care of people in Early Intervention in Psychosis services and calls for these recommendations to be included in the Modern Service Framework for Severe Mental Illness (SMI).

Keele's Professor Carolyn Chew-Graham led qualitative research as part of the wider EXTEND study, which found that supporting people through the transition to community mental health teams or general practice at the end of their time using Early Intervention in Psychosis services is crucial to help people to move on successfully and continue in their recovery.

Professor Carolyn Chew-Graham, Professor of General Practice Research at Keele University said: “We interviewed service users and carers who described the very helpful support they received whilst under EIP services, which stopped on discharge, particularly to primary care. Our Lived Experience Group emphasised that further work is needed to smooth this transition.”

Every spring, Keele’s flowering cherries put on a spectacular display. Nearly 50 of the approximately 240 varieties in our National Collection were created by 95-year-old Japanese cherry breeder Masatoshi Asari, and we were proud to award him an honorary degree at our graduation ceremonies in July.

Mr Asari was unable to join us at the ceremony, but earlier this month he finally donned his graduation robes as he received his honorary degree from Keele at a special ceremony in Japan. 🎓

Dr Toshihiko Kitagawa travelled to Japan to present Mr Asari with his honorary degree certificate and commemorative gifts from Keele in a conferment ceremony, which was held as part of the opening ceremony of an exhibition of artwork created by Ukrainian children in London.

Mr Asari's lifelong work breeding and sharing flowering cherries has helped build international friendships and promote a message of peace – including through the Japan-Ukraine Sakura Peace Initiative.

The next time you see Keele’s cherry blossoms, remember there’s an extraordinary story behind them. Congratulations, Mr Asari!🌸

Vittal Rao has taught medical students at Keele since 2013. Vittal is a consultant upper gastrointestinal (GI) and bariatric surgeon at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM), where he has worked for 12 years, specialising in complex laparoscopic procedures.
