Some amazing grant success from our PhD Researchers, with not one....but two(!!) grants from the British Association for Forensic Anthropology (BAFA) awarded to members of our team at Keele University!

Amy Heath has been awarded funding to support the initial stage of her PhD data collection investigating how sharp force trauma influences post-mortem body changes. Amy will address conflicting findings in the current evidence base, and her research aims to improve the interpretation of forensic evidence and strengthen the evidence available to support future forensic investigations.

Catherine Roberts, on the other end of the PhD scale, has been awarded funding to support the final steps of her research. Catherine will use the funding to conduct sample staining observe how post-mortem changes to teeth progress over time, and identify how their progression is impacted by burial environment.

🎓 This week, we had the pleasure of celebrating our Summer Graduation and the amazing achievements of our Class of 2026.

It was wonderful to see so many of our undergraduate and postgraduate students from across our Forensic Science programmes officially receive their degrees. We couldn’t be prouder of everything you have accomplished. Your hard work, determination, and resilience have brought you to this incredible milestone, and it has been a privilege to be part of your journey.

Sweet Farewells and Exciting Labs.
Last week the Texas Summer School came to a close with an exciting display and presentation of their final project posters.

We’ve very much enjoyed the time we’ve had the students here from Texas A&M and we hope they have enjoyed it too.

We are still very busy here at Keele Forensics. This week are have Apprenticeship week running along with a few outreach events.

Some exciting news from some of our Forensic staff.

Vivienne Heaton, Jamie Pringle and Kristopher Wisniewski, along with colleagues at the University of Lancashire and RSK, have been working with Locate International over the last 12 months, revisiting a cold case, trying to help provide answers to the family.

Viv and Jamie visited BBC Radio Stoke last week to discuss what’s been happening.

This week our Program Director for Internationalisation and all around bug expert Dr Falko Drijfhout hosted the European Association for Forensic Entomology at Keele University!

Over three days there was a packed schedule of podium presentations, poster sessions, and even some lab workshops. Delegates getting to enjoy all this in the warm weather (or cool inside of Keele Hall!)

It was not only great to see members of our team hosting an international conference like this, but to also see our students volunteering to help organise and host the event. On that note huge thanks to Lamprini and Kirsten for the photos!

Really exciting to see our summer school students from Texas A&M University progress in their research projects here at Keele University!

Last week they got trained on a variety of research equipment, and next week they'll be presenting them at a conference day here, but for now they're still getting stuck in with data collection. Just today alone we've seen groups cutting and analysing pain killers, conducting SEM analysis on various materials, skeletal inventorying of human remains, and conducting microCT analysis on dental tissues. There was even a small group who braved the heat to collect decomposition research samples!

We can't wait to see them present all their findings next week, and we'll make sure to post an update on the day here too!

Last week Keele University hosted its annual PGR Symposium. It was great to see our own PhD researchers Amy Heath, Katie Hewitt, and Charlotte Loy give excellent presentations and posters - as well as helping organising the event with Kelly Jeffery!

Huge congratulations to Charlotte who won the Judge's and People's choice awards for the Keele 3 Minute Thesis competition! She will now go forward to represent in the Vitae 3MT competition! 👏

Congratulations also to Katie who came second in the poster competition!

Today we got to show our summer school students from Texas A&M University around all our labs. They got to network with our supervisory teams and start planning their projects.

Specifically they got to play with our equipment, as well as see our facilities.

Projects to start next week after some poster planning, more equipment training on and other analytical equipment.

We are extremely excited to be welcoming back students and faculty from Texas A&M University, and their group, next week for a summer school spanning the rest of June and into July!

This is an ever amazing international collaboration where the students from Texas get dedicated research design training, bespoke research equipment training, and then get to conduct their own research project culminating in a poster conference before they leave us.

Last year the project's ranged from , to , to . This year preliminary project ideas are looking even more interesting, with everything from , to , to even .

We look forward to meeting all the students visiting us Keele University next week, and we will be back with updates from their projects as they progress!

Our curriculum also spans the full forensic process - from crime scene investigation to courtroom presentation - and covers a diverse range of topics including genetics, toxicology, anthropology, arson investigation, and forensic analysis, alongside contemporary areas such as digital forensics, forensic geoscience, and wildlife forensics.

The range of our courses also reflects our wide success, with students able to study for both BSc, MSci, and MSc degrees in forensic science. These include more specialist courses in and .
