During the visit, a Special Session 'The University of Manchester and Astronomy Development in Thailand from 1875 to the Future' was held in the Lovell lecture room. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presented plaques of appreciation to University of Manchester members who has dedicated and contributed to astronomy development in Thailand. An awarded plaque for Jim Cohen was presented to Mrs. Patricia Cohen, who accompanied by one of Jim's daughters, Beth Cohen.

Dr. Raymond James Cohen (1948-2006) was one of the world leading radio astronomers in the field of astrophysical masers. Apart from his scientific contributions, his works in radio frequency protection are also recognized worldwide. He was a member of the Scientific Committee on Frequency Allocations for Radio Astronomy and Space Science (IUCAF) and a Chairman of the Expert Committee on Radio Astronomy Frequencies (CRAF) of the European Science Foundation during 1995-2000. During 1994-2006, Dr. Cohen supervised 4 Thai PhD. students in Radio Astronomy, who are pioneers in this field in Thailand. His academic visits to Thailand, giving lectures in radio astronomy in several Thai Universities, put a foundation to radio astronomy development in Thailand today.
