🦖✨ June Has Started with a ROAR at Top of the Tots Daycare! ✨🦖

Our little explorers have had an amazing start to our Dinosaur Month, immersing themselves in a range of exciting, hands-on activities designed to develop learning through play!

This week the children have been:

🦕 Creating colourful dinosaur footprint trails through paint exploration
🦖 Building dinosaurs using shapes and problem-solving skills
🟢 Exploring colours, patterns and matching activities
🦕 Using playdough to create dinosaur fossils and models
🌋 Investigating our dinosaur small world habitat, complete with volcanoes, lakes, plants and prehistoric creatures
🧩 Developing fine motor skills through puzzles, construction and sorting activities
💬 Building language skills through storytelling, role play and dinosaur discussions

Our dinosaur topic encourages curiosity, imagination, creativity, communication and early mathematical thinking while making learning fun and engaging for all ages.

🐞🐝 Minibeast Week at Top of the Tots Daycare! 🦋🐞

During May Our little learners have had a wonderful time exploring the fascinating world of minibeasts this week! Through hands-on sensory trays, counting and matching activities, creative healthy snacks, and outdoor play, the children have been discovering all about insects and bugs while developing their maths, communication, fine motor, and social skills.

The children enjoyed investigating different minibeasts in our sensory tuff tray, counting legs and spots, strengthening their finger muscles through clipping activities, and creating their very own fruit minibeasts during snack time. We also made the most of the beautiful weather with trips to the park, where the children developed their physical skills, confidence, and friendships through active play.

At Top of the Tots, we believe children learn best when they’re having fun, and this week’s minibeast adventures have certainly been full of smiles, curiosity, and excitement! 🐞🌿💚

🌼🐛 Spring is blooming at Top of the Tots! 🐛🌼

Here at Top of the Tots, learning goes far beyond the classroom walls. Over the last few weeks, our little ones have been fully immersed in our Spring and Minibeast theme, exploring the world around them through hands-on play, outdoor adventures, sensory learning, music, stories, and healthy eating.

From creating our own Very Hungry Caterpillar activities, hunting for mini beasts, exploring sensory tuff trays, and even meeting beautiful animals up close — every experience is carefully planned to build confidence, curiosity, communication, and a love of learning 🌱✨

And when we say “Eat the Rainbow”… we really mean it! 🌈🍊🍍🥒🥕We encourage our children to explore healthy foods through colour, texture, taste and fun — helping build positive habits for life while learning about nutrition in exciting, child-friendly ways.

🌼 Spring Adventures at Top of the Tots! 🌼

What a wonderful start to the new term we’ve had at Top of the Tots Daycare! Our children have been busy exploring the local community and looking for the first signs of spring. 🌱

During our walk we spotted beautiful spring flowers, including daisies and bright yellow daffodils. The children loved collecting and observing them closely while we talked about the changing seasons, colours in nature and the signs that spring is on its way.

As we explored the community, the children noticed flags flying from buildings, which led to conversations about colours, patterns and where flags come from. We were also very excited to see several fire engines, which sparked lots of discussion about the important jobs people do to help keep us safe. 🚒

One lovely moment was when one of the children confidently spoke to a local workman, asking what he was doing. It was wonderful to see such curiosity and confidence when communicating with members of our community. Experiences like this help children understand the different jobs people do in their community.

The children also showed fantastic awareness of the environment when we walked near the river. They noticed that some things in the water could hurt the fish, which led to a conversation about caring for nature and looking after wildlife. 🌍🐟

Our adventure even took us into the local barbers, where the children were fascinated to see the budgies in their cage. The barber kindly invited the children inside and gave them each a lolly, which was a lovely and unexpected end to our walk. Moments like these help children build confidence while exploring their local community and the people and jobs within it. 🐦

We finished our outing with some time at the park, where the children continued their exploration through play, movement and teamwork.

Trips like this are such an important part of early childhood development. By getting out into the community and nature, children are able to:

✨ Build confidence and independence
✨ Develop language and communication skills
✨ Learn about the world around them
✨ Understand their community and the roles people play within it
✨ Enjoy physical activity and fresh air

At Top of the Tots we believe some of the best learning happens outside the classroom, where children can explore, ask questions and discover the world around them.

🌨❄ A Wintery Start to the New Year at Top of the Tots Daycare! ❄🌨

As we step into a brand-new year, our little learners have jumped straight into exploring the wonders of winter! 🧣🐧✨

Over the next few weeks, the children will be diving into a world of cold weather, icy textures, and snowy fun as they discover how winter changes the world around us. Through play-based learning, they’ll be:

✨ Investigating the winter environment
Exploring ice, frost, and chilly weather through hands-on sensory play and simple science experiments that build curiosity and early scientific thinking.

✨ Learning about Arctic animals
From polar bears to penguins, the children will discover how animals keep warm, find food, and survive in snowy places. This sparks discussions around habitats, body coverings, and seasonal changes in nature.

✨ Exploring colour, shape, and size
Sorting winter-themed objects, building with “ice blocks,” and matching shapes in snowy small-world trays to support early maths, problem-solving, and observation skills.

✨ Creating beautiful winter art
Children will be using paint, glitter, sponges, and icy colours to design their own snowy scenes. These activities develop fine motor skills, creativity, and expressive language.

✨ Understanding how animals live in winter
We’ll be looking at migration, hibernation, and how animals adapt to the colder months—helping the children learn about the natural world and develop empathy for living things.

Our winter theme supports all areas of the EYFS, encouraging communication, early maths, personal development, and imaginative play. Most importantly… the children are having SO much fun while learning! ❄💙

🍁 Autumn Adventures at Top of the Tots Daycare

This month, the children at Top of the Tots Daycare have been fully embracing the Autumn season — exploring the changing weather, seasonal vegetables, and the wonderful world of The Gruffalo!

Our curious learners have been busy observing how the weather changes around them — feeling the wind on their faces, watching the rain fall, and noticing how the trees are transforming with colourful leaves. These experiences have encouraged the children to use descriptive language such as breezy, cold, and drizzly, supporting their communication and understanding of the world.

Alongside this, the children have explored a range of Autumn vegetables, learning about their colours, textures, and smells. Our practitioners provided exciting hands-on activities where the children developed their gross motor skills through mixing, pouring, scooping, and stirring — discovering how things change as they mix ingredients together. These sensory-rich experiences also supported early mathematical concepts like measuring, comparing, and predicting.

To link their learning to literacy, the children have enjoyed the much-loved story of The Gruffalo. They’ve explored the characters, joined in with familiar phrases, and re-enacted scenes using small-world play and outdoor resources. This has helped them build confidence in storytelling, language development, and imagination — while also linking to their understanding of woodland animals and changing seasons.

Our staff have delivered wonderful educational opportunities that bring learning to life — making each activity purposeful, playful, and tailored to the children’s interests.

As Autumn continues, we will keep exploring seasonal changes, encouraging curiosity, creativity, and confidence in all our little learners. 🍂✨
