My most recent multi-layer reduction linoprint, ‘Ditchling Beacon view’ hoping to capture the sometimes quite dizzying effect of looking down the scarp slope of the South Downs across to the field patterns and small communities of the Weald.

‘Sussex Stile’, my new linoprint, a mixture of multi-colour reduction for the landscape and a separate block for the stile. As I was effectively ‘covering’ the landscape with the man-made features, I had to build up more opaque layers on the stile/fence.

Day 20 of the NROS 30-day challenge. This is a close-up of the large etching plate I’m still struggling with. Persevering, I de-greased it, put a fresh hard ground on and stopped-out everything apart from the very darkest areas which needed more definition and contrast following my Curwen Print Study Centre day. I drew through the ground, used various roulette wheels for texture and tried open-bite too before etching with the nitric acid and just have to proof it now! Anyone with a large etching press out there that would easily take paper at least 600mm x 500mm that I could use for a morning??? I have everything else.

I realise how fortunate I am to have this workshop where I can go at any time. Over its 130 year history this room has been a shoemaker’s space, a photographer’s dark room and a police station during the war. Great stories in these walls…

Pleased to have dropped off three of my recent linoprints at for them to exhibit: Autumn Stubble’, ‘Downland Winter’ and ‘Downland Snow’. The very latest print, ‘Downland Snow’ is part of a series using just three hues of blue and for this I’ve been inspired by the Scottish artist, Bryan Angus, although my subject matter is always the South Downs rather than the Scottish coastline and Highlands!
