I’ve written near on 40000 words of this - decided to print it out and (inevitably) ran out of ink! It’s been fun though, more to follow.

Good morning!

A copy of English painter Sir Edwin Landseer’s “A quiet pipe”. Landseer (1802 – 1873) was popular in Victorian Britain for his paintings of animals and is best known for his lion sculptures at the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square.

[Alt text: An elderly Jack Russell Terrier with droopy ears and squinty eyes puffs on a pipe. On his collar is “Pears”, a popular soap brand at the time]

A dog smoking a pipe, with 'Pears' inscribed on his collar. Chromolithograph after E. Landseer. Date: [1907] Reference: 565569i

I’m doing more character work - she’s Amish - lost her son in a tragic accident.

'Sarah was a woman shaped by silence, her life a tapestry of unspoken rules and quiet endurance. In her community, she was known for her diligence—the careful stitching of quilts, the way her hands deftly worked the soil in her garden. But those who looked closer saw the weight she carried, a burden invisible to most but impossible to ignore. Her features, though soft, bore traces of wear. Her cheeks were pale from too many sleepless nights, her blue eyes shadowed with the kind of sorrow that didn’t fade with time. Yet there was a strength to her that defied her fragile appearance. It was in the way she kept moving, kept working, even as grief gnawed at the edges of her soul.'

BOOK OF THE MONTH: We are starting 2025 with a Martina classic, THE LADYKILLER

A killer is on the loose. It’s up to DI Kate Burrows to stop him. Get inside the mind of a chilling killer and the only woman who can stop him.

A fan favourite, The Ladykiller is the first book in the DI Kate Burrows series and the first time that Martina writes from the perspective of the Old Bill.

Great to know a bit more about this anticipated book!

By the time of his early death in 1988, Raymond Carver had established himself as one of the great practitioners of the American short story, a writer who had not only found his own voice but imprinted it in the imaginations of thousands of readers. 'Where I’m Calling From', his last collection, includes seven new works previously unpublished in book form, capturing the essence of human experience with unparalleled depth and simplicity.
