On Monday evening, a group of Year 9 students competed in the Suffolk finals of the Dora Love Prize. 7 schools were part of this event, and the quality of the presentations was extremely high.

We are delighted to inform you that Northgate won!

The students did a superb presentation, and the judges were extremely impressed by their hard work, dedication to inclusion, and determination to have a lasting positive impact on our local community.

The students were presented their award by the Mayor of Ipswich and Dora Love's granddaughter.

Thank you to Stefan Long, Lee Smith and Jack Abbott for their support throughout the project.

We were delighted to welcome Dame Rachel de Souza, Children’s Commissioner, to school yesterday to talk with some of our High School and Northgate Sixth Form students. Dame Rachel is touring the country to hear the views of young people as part of ‘The Big Future’ survey. Our students were a huge credit to themselves, their families and our school in the way that they talked with Dame Rachel about the issues that matter to them - we are so proud of them and grateful that the voices of our students were valued and could be heard by the Children’s Commissioner.

BBC Look East spoke with some of our students and staff regarding their perspectives and Dame Rachel’s visit. It was featured on the BBC Look East Evening News yesterday and you can catch it on BBC iPlayer until 6:59pm today.

Dora Love Prize Social Media Takeover 🎙️

Northgate’s 2026 Dora Love Prize students would like to thank staff and students at our school who have shared their experiences of living with disabilities or what is like to be the parent of a neurodiverse child.

Like Ms Ward Ashton said: “It’s ok to say I need some support, it’s okay to say I need some help”.

Dora Love Prize Social Media Takeover🎙️

Northgate’s 2026 Dora Love Prize students would like to thank Cllr Lesley Scott-Boutell, ex Mayor of Colchester and Miss Farthing for sharing their lived experiences of living with a hidden disability. The interviews gave us a better understanding of deaf perspectives.

We were inspired by their determination to make a difference and improve the experiences of deaf people today.

We are Dora Love students, and have been inspired by workshops and local artists. We decided to use historical research and interviews with our school community and friends of Northgate to create a painting reflecting on hidden disabilities, as you can see behind us.

The painting depicts 2 people each carrying a backpack which represents hidden and visible disabilities. The right hand side shows the past where people with disabilities were shunned in society. The left hand side shows the present and future where people are treated with respect and are included in society.
We are raising awareness through art and hope our picture will fuel conversations.

Dora Love Prize Social Media Takeover 🎙️

Northgate’s 2026 Dora Love Prize students would like to thank Lee Smith from Ipswich Town for sharing all the great work that is happening at the football club to support people with disabilities and hidden disabilities.

Lee gave us an insight into all the work going on behind the scenes to improve the match day experience for supporters with disabilities. We look forward to visiting the stadium and establishing our own student forum to contribute to ongoing improvements.

Dora Love Prize Social Media Takeover 🎙️

Our project ‘Unjudged & Understood: A world beyond labels’ aims to create a path from misunderstanding to empathy.

In order to maximise impact we are using a variety of creative art forms and this social media campaign to raise awareness and hopefully make a positive difference to our local community.

Dora Love Prize students would like to thank Stefan Long, Mayor of Ipswich (2025-26), for visiting our school and agreeing to be interviewed by us. The Mayor helped us understand what Ipswich Borough Council is doing to support people in our community with disabilities. The Mayor listened to our perspectives and even invited us to raise questions at a local council meeting! Thank you for this amazing opportunity and for the chance to shape the future for people with disabilities.

Like Stefan Long Mayor of Ipswich (2025-26) told us,
“different isn’t bad, different is good”.
