Last night I had the pleasure of watching Joanna Carrick’s play, The Ungodly, which charts the evolution of Matthew Hopkins from nervous boy to witchfinder general. You could do worse than start by reading the review by Libby Puves posted here, as it explains the story and I share most of its sentiments and opinions. I lived the careful direction of the ‘in the round’ staging and the intimacy of the small theatre really complemented this production. It was great to speak to Josnna Carrick briefly afterwards and renew an old acquaintance, ESPS she has had the exciting news that the play is moving from London to New York off Broadway. I recommend seeing this play wholeheartedly. Something I really enjoyed was the gradual way Hopkins put on a new layer of clothing until he finally wore the full regalia of hat, boots and cloak that provides the iconic image we are all familiar with. It reminded us that all ‘evil villains’ are simply humans.
