Last week, students from One Sixth Form College took part in the Seeds of Hope Hack, exploring sustainability, social justice and global citizenship, and how local action can create global change. The event challenged students to tackle real-world issues linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and develop ideas for positive action.
Our students explored a wide range of topics, including ocean pollution, wildfires, deforestation, media literacy and light pollution. Their ideas included campaigning to protect our oceans, raising awareness of wildfire damage through a social media challenge, exploring how deforestation contributes to issues such as poverty and climate change, and promoting tree planting as a way to reduce industrial CO₂ emissions. Students also proposed the use of motion-sensor warm lighting in urban areas to reduce light pollution while maintaining public safety.
Another group focused on the importance of media and statistics literacy, encouraging open-mindedness, critical thinking and respectful discussion in an increasingly complex world.
What stood out most was the passion, creativity and thoughtfulness of our students. They demonstrated that young people are not only aware of the challenges facing society but are already developing innovative solutions to address them.
A fantastic day of discussion, collaboration and action. The future is in good hands.
