The health and fitness industry loves a trend. Monthly, we’re sold the next “magic bullet” that will transform our body, health, and life. The reality? The things that get the most attention are often the least important - Here are 5 overrated areas of fitness...
1. DAILY STEPS: Moving more is fantastic. But somehow “be active” became “hit 10k steps.” Which actually came from a Japanese pedometer campaign in the ‘60s, not groundbreaking science. Walking on a treadmill for an hour then sitting for the next 12 doesn’t make you healthy ✅ The benefits come from moving throughout the day: Walking instead of driving. Taking the stairs. Gardening. Playing with the kids. Housework. A relaxing stroll. Movement isn’t a number. It’s a lifestyle.
2. THE PERFECT PROGRAMME: It doesn’t exist. I’ve written thousands of programmes with every detail mapped out. Some delivered incredible results. Some didn’t. Why? Because a mediocre programme executed consistently beats the “perfect” programme executed poorly every time ✅ Success comes from: Effort. Consistency. Discipline. Adherence. Patience. Master the basics and repeat them longer than everyone else.
3. MOTIVATION: Motivation is overrated. One day you’re fired up. The next day you’re not. If your success depends on motivation, you’re in trouble ✅ Build your actions around: Purpose. Values. Habits. Identity. Know why you’re doing it. When the excitement fades, purpose and results keep you moving forward.
4. COUNTING CALORIES: Yes, calorie tracking works. But for most people, it’s not where they should start. Before tracking every gram, focus on: More protein. Better quality. Portion control. Meal routines. Less processed crap. Less mindless snacking ✅ Most people can achieve incredible results simply by improving habits and consistency.
5. “SMART” DEVICES: Fitness trackers, sleep scores, recovery scores, stress scores... Useful? Sometimes. Annoying? Often. Too many check a device before checking in with themselves ✅ Information without action is useless. The truth? You don’t need more data. You need common sense. I don’t need a watch to tell me I’m tired, stressed, or haven’t moved enough.

I wanted to get into shape. Not somebody else’s version of “great shape.” Mine.
I wanted to feel strong, confident, disciplined and proud of myself. I wanted to build resilience physically and mentally. And I knew it would take more than a gym membership or meal plan.
I needed a vision. A reason why it mattered and a clear idea of who I wanted to become. Because without direction, motivation disappears the moment things get difficult.
I also needed structure. Not just workouts and calories, but standards, habits and rules that would keep me moving forwards even on the days I didn’t feel like it.
I knew challenges were guaranteed. Motivation would fade. Progress would slow. There would be setbacks, frustration and self-doubt. So I stopped looking for a quick fix and made one promise to myself: I would keep going until the job was done.
Once I stopped obsessing over timelines, I became more focused on the person I was becoming along the way.
The truth is, I trained for years before I really knuckled down. Years of inconsistency. Years of wanting results without fully matching the discipline required.
But eventually something shifted. I stopped relying on motivation and started relying on standards. My ‘Rules of Engagement’. I focused on progression, consistency and learning how my body and mind responded to challenge.
Most importantly, I started thinking long term.
That mindset stopped me quitting too early or believing things “weren’t working” just because results weren’t instant.
Instead, I became excited by the process.
Every workout, every meal and every disciplined decision was helping build a stronger version of myself.
And looking back now, the habits and rules I built then are still the same things that keep me in shape today. Well… more or less 😅

“Are you in love?” No… I’m healthy 😌✌🏼
And when you’re healthy, it shows.
You glow differently. You smile more. You wake up feeling lighter instead of exhausted. Your body moves with energy instead of resistance. Your mind feels clearer, calmer, more positive…
Health is more than looking fit. It’s feeling rested. Feeling strong. Feeling confident in your own skin. It’s having the energy to enjoy your life, not just get through the day.
When you start taking care of yourself consistently, with movement, nourishing food, sleep, hydration, and self-respect, your whole presence changes.
You become brighter. Happier. More content. More YOU!
Don’t chase perfection - Chase health.
Because healthy looks good on everybody.

Energy

Most people don’t realise how much sugar is impacting them… until they start reducing it.
Too much can contribute to:
➡️ Energy crashes
➡️ Mood swings & cravings
➡️ Poor sleep & brain fog
➡️ Increased inflammation (aches & pains)
➡️ Fat gain around the waistline
➡️ Poor gut health & low motivation
And no - sugar isn’t “evil.”You do NOT need to cut it out completely.
But if your health, mood, energy and midsection are all struggling at the same time… it might be time to stop pretending nutrition isn’t part of the problem.
The answer isn’t extremes. Not detox teas. Not starving yourself Monday-Friday then smashing biscuits all weekend. The answer is STRUCTURE 👊🏼
One thing I’ve found works best?
“Crowd out the bad.”
Instead of obsessing over what to REMOVE… focus on what needs ADDING:
✅ More protein
✅ More fibre
✅ More fruit & veg
✅ More healthy fats
✅ More water
✅ More proper meals
Do that consistently and cravings reduce, energy improves and suddenly there’s less room for all those slippery sugary calories every evening.
And yes… it takes effort.
But so does feeling rubbish all the time.
🍦 Beach? Have the ice cream.
🍿 Cinema? Have the popcorn.
🍰 Birthday? Enjoy dessert
✌🏼 Plan it. Fit it in. Enjoy it.
Just stop adding sugary extras to every coffee run, meal deal and petrol station visit and especially be mindful of liquid calories - because sugary drinks, fancy coffees & alcohol can hammer your:
⚠️ Energy
⚠️ Appetite control
⚠️ Fat loss
⚠️ Sleep & recovery
No one should tell you to remove sugar forever.
But if your health isn’t where you want it to be… it’s time to do something about it. And unless you’re a dog, stop “treating” or rewarding yourself with sugar as part of your everyday stress reliever.
It’s easy to justify. Just hard to burn it off right!?

Nobody’s coming to do it for you…
But the right support can change everything.
You’ve already got more than enough information, probably too much. Workouts saved. Diets bookmarked. Plans started and stopped. New gym kit and even a choice of gyms and classes ready to go.
So what’s missing?
Clarity. Structure. Accountability - that’s where a good coach comes in.
A real trainer doesn’t just give you a plan and disappear…
They listen to you, your lifestyle, your struggles, your goals. They understand where you’re at (not where you “should” be). They plan and structure something realistic around your life. They design a path that actually works for you. They show you how, what and why so you’re not just guessing. They educate you so you build knowledge, not just follow orders. They check in especially when motivation drops. They keep you accountable when excuses creep in. They motivate you when you’re low… They discipline you when you need direction…
And most importantly 👉🏼 a great coach genuinely cares about your progress. Because let’s be honest… Feeling tired? Achey? Fed up? Stuck? That doesn’t magically change.
And there’s never a perfect moment where life slows down enough for you to begin. Your diary magically clears, your energy magically increases, you wake up feeling amazing g and raring to go. It just doesn’t happen that way. That’s why structure and support matter.
You don’t need more information. You need guidance. Consistency. Action. Start small. Build momentum. Stack wins. Change your mindset and you change your direction. Change your habits and you change your life.
No one said it wouldbe easy.
But doing it alone is often harder than it needs to be.

Happy Easter!
Whether you’re celebrating the rebirth of Christ, the chocolate (let’s be honest 🍫), or just the fact it’s a long weekend… enjoy it.
If you’ve been hanging on for dear life waiting for the warmer, brighter days to arrive, you’re not alone.
This weekend isn’t just a shift in the calendar or the weather… it’s a shift in mindset.
A chance to reset. Recharge. And maybe remind yourself what you actually want moving forward. Big goals are best broken down into smaller bite size chunks. It could be daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly like mine.
(But zoom in on the details to reveal the magic)
Let’s stay focused, positive and believing in what we do. So eat the Easter eggs. Switch off. Spend time with your people. No guilt. No pressure.
But next week… we’re back to business 👊🏼

It’s not about giving up on what you want…
it’s about finally committing to what it takes to get there.
Because wanting something without backing it up with action? That’s where the frustration lives.
Everyone says they want to get in great shape… but if I sat you down 6 months from now and asked how you did it, you wouldn’t start by talking about how “hard” it was.
You’d tell me how you feel.
Stronger. Leaner. More confident. Sleeping better. Thinking clearer. Proud of yourself again.
And here’s the part most people don’t realise - the habits that once felt like sacrifice? They don’t stay that way.
The early mornings… The workouts when you couldn’t be bothered… The better food choices… The discipline…
They become your normal. They become easier. They become part of who you are.
But none of that happens if you keep waiting for the “right time.” Because it’s not coming.
There will always be something - work stress, lack of time, low motivation, life getting in the way. So if you keep looking for reasons not to start… you’ll always find them.
Instead, start flipping it:
Start finding reasons to take action.
Start finding reasons to show up.
Start finding reasons to back yourself.
Because the truth is - you’re not that far away from feeling fu***ng incredible… but you are one decision away from staying exactly where you are.
Commit to the process. Not just the outcome - That’s where everything changes.

Monday is your reminder that the standards you set for yourself matter. Not just in the gym, but in how you show up for your life, your health, and the people around you.
Being strong isn’t only about the weight on the bar (although that’s cool too). It’s about the choices you make when motivation is low, when life is busy, and when excuses would be easier.
💥 Choose the habits that build you up
💥 Choose the discipline that moves you forward
💥 Choose to be someone who raises the standard
And remember this: when you get stronger, you help the people around you get stronger too.
Let’s start the week with purpose. Set your bar high and go after it. Hashtag happy hour at the bar!

REALITY CHECK.
Clients say this all the time… “Yeah but you’re a PT… you don’t understand.”
Apparently we don’t struggle. Apparently it’s easy for us. Let’s clear that up. PTs are not superheroes. We’re just people who refuse to quit. We have bad nights sleep. We go off plan…
We want to get pi**ed on the weekend.
We struggle to stick to programmes.
We get stressed. (Really stressed)
Our strength drops.
Our fitness drops.
We want to eat crap.
After a 12-hour day we don’t want to cook either.
Sometimes we want to cry.
Sometimes we procrastinate between clients.
Sometimes we feel like giving it all up.
We guess our macros wrong.
We feel burnt out, exhausted.
We get frustrated.
We want to sit around doing absolutely nothing.
We don’t always want to train.
We don’t always want to diet.
We don’t always want to show up.
But here’s the difference.
We do it anyway. Not perfectly. But consistently. Because we see every single day what happens when people stop fighting for their health.
And we don’t want that for you. Or for ourselves. So we show up.
Even when we’re tired. Even when we’re stressed. Even when life is messy. We put the effort in and get it done, the best we can. For you. For us. And for those around us. So maybe we are superheroes!?!?!?
And the coaches still doing this after 5, 10, 20+ years? They’re the ones who care the most.
We’re not better than you (but sometimes we are lol). We’re just walking the same path first - Coach Ryan
