Welcoming our children back to Sendsory after the summer holidays has been rooted in the following priorities:

Reconnect-rebuilding relationships, trust and a sense of belonging.

Regulate-creating calm, predictable routines and helping our young people feel safe and ready to engage.

Rebuild confidence-creating small successes, celebrating effort and reminding every child that they can achieve.

At Sendsory, we know that connection comes before learning. When children feel safe, understood and valued, we can begin to rebuild their confidence and re-engage them with education.

Reconnect. Regulate. Rebuild.

Every child deserves to feel safe, understood, connected, and supported.

At Sensory, our practice is grounded in respected, evidence-informed approaches that help us understand what’s underneath the behaviour and respond to each child with compassion and curiosity.

From PACE and attachment theory, to the Neurosequential Model, polyvagal-informed practice, sensory integration, and therapeutic approaches, we draw on a range of frameworks to meet children where they are, not where we expect them to be.

Because regulation comes before connection, and connection creates the foundation for growth.

🌈 Why sensory & messy play matters in alternative provision*🌈

Sensory and messy play is so much more than simply having fun! It provides meaningful opportunities for our pupils to explore, regulate, communicate, develop confidence and learn through hands-on experiences.

Through activities such as sand, water, playdough, clay, textures, mixing, pouring and creating, pupils can develop:

🧠 Cognitive skills– exploring cause and effect, problem-solving, predicting and experimenting
🤲 Fine & gross motor skills– strengthening coordination, hand control and body awareness
💬 Communication & social skills– making choices, sharing, requesting and interacting with others
💛 Emotional regulation– providing calming, engaging sensory experiences that can support regulation
🌱 Confidence & self-esteem– opportunities to explore, make mistakes and try again without the pressure of a “right” answer
🌍 Understanding of the world– discovering new materials, experiences, cultures, environments and concepts through practical learning

At Sendsory, we provide theme-based messy play that changes every week, giving pupils new opportunities to explore and build their understanding of the world around them.

Each theme gives us a chance to introduce new vocabulary, experiences, textures and ideas while supporting pupils to learn in a way that is practical, engaging and accessible.

Preparing children with SEND for returning to alternative provision
Going back after a break can feel like a BIG step for some children and young people with SEND.
For some, it’s not simply a case of “getting back into routine”. New expectations, busy environments, changes in staff, transitions and uncertainty can all feel overwhelming.

A few things that can help:
✨ Use visual timetables and countdowns
✨ Talk through what the first day will look like
✨ Practise tricky transitions before returning
✨ Identify a trusted adult and safe space
✨ Prepare sensory and regulation supports
✨ Keep expectations small and achievable
✨ Work together with the AP so everyone knows the plan

Most importantly, remember that connection comes before expectation.
A successful first day might simply be arriving, feeling safe, reconnecting with familiar adults and knowing that they can ask for help.
Let’s make returning feel predictable, supportive and safe — not something children have to face alone.

The benefits of outdoor learning in Alternative Provision

Outdoor learning gives young people the opportunity to learn in a different way, in a different environment, and often with a different sense of purpose.

From building confidence and resilience to supporting emotional regulation and mental wellbeing, being outdoors can have a powerful impact.

Practical activities encourage teamwork, communication, problem-solving and independence, while helping young people recognise their strengths and experience success.

For many pupils at Sendsory, outdoor learning provides the space to re-engage, build positive relationships and discover that they are capable of more than they may have believed.

Learning doesn’t always have to happen in a classroom. Sometimes, stepping outside is where the real learning begins.

Our 4 Commitments to Every Child

Every child deserves to feel understood, supported and able to thrive, especially children with SEND.

In our alternative provision, our practice is rooted in four commitments:

Therapeutic Environment: creating spaces where children feel safe, regulated, valued and ready to learn.

Therapeutic Curriculum: adapting learning around the whole child, building confidence, connection, communication and a sense of achievement.

Sensory-Aware Practice: recognising that sensory needs can impact how a child feels, communicates and engages, and responding with understanding rather than judgement.

Evidence-Based Tracking: carefully tracking progress, wellbeing and outcomes so that our support is purposeful, individualised and continually informed by evidence.

These four commitments underpin everything we do because every child deserves an education that meets them where they are and helps them discover where they can go.

Subject Spotlight: COOKING

Our cooking curriculum is about so much more than following a recipe.
Every half term, our children take part in a cooking unit linked to a different topic, giving them opportunities to develop practical, meaningful life skills in a hands-on and engaging way.
From planning and measuring to communication, teamwork, sequencing, independence and trying something new, every session is an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom.

We want our children to leave us with the skills, confidence and independence they need for life.

Regulate. Connect. Engage. Grow

At Sendsory, we believe meaningful learning starts with the right foundations. Our 4-step approach supports every child to:
Regulate – feel safe, calm and ready to learn
Connect – build trusting relationships
Engage – become curious, motivated and involved
Grow – develop skills, confidence and independence

Because when children feel regulated and connected, they’re ready to engage, and that’s when real learning and growth can happen
