1985: Introducing Courtney Pine, a talented young jazz musician.

21-year-old saxophonist Courtney Pine was filmed rehearsing with his band in 1985, and he also took time out to talk about his love of jazz and his work with the Community Music Workshop. Pine had recently done a gig at Ronnie Scott’s and hoped that more Black musicians would join the jazz scene.

Clip taken from Ebony, originally broadcast on BBC Two, 13 December 1985.

The BBC is celebrating Black British Music and its influences with a season of programming inspired by the opening of The Music Is Black exhibition at V&A East Museum.

WE’RE IN 👏

We’ve been longlisted for UK City of Culture 2029, a huge milestone that recognises the creativity, ambition and potential across Ipswich. This is a shared achievement, shaped by our communities, cultural organisations, businesses, schools and residents who believe in what Ipswich can become.

Culture is at the heart of Ipswich and it’s future- creating opportunity, bringing people together and helping our town thrive. And at the centre of it all are our young people, whose ideas and energy continue to shape what comes next. 🙌

The competition is strong, and we’re not slowing down, This is just the beginning! Now we focus on building the strongest possible case, together.

This is a proud moment for Ipswich- let’s keep going! 🌟
