Today’s post is a little later than our normal ones, but I had to make one when I realised it was the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh!!! 🍯

I don’t know about your children, but mine absolutely loved all the stories growing up. We have quite a few different compilations, and just seeing the illustrations brings back so many lovely memories of reading them together. And apparently that love doesn't leave as they grow up, as my eldest bought herself some Winnie the Pooh pyjamas just the other week 😂

It’s strange to think that the first book was published 100 years ago, yet those characters are so familiar to so many of us children, parents and grandparents! It really is one of my favourite things about so many children's books, that we get to share stories with our children that we ourselves remember from our own childhood.

Our Science group sessions run in a way that allows questions to be asked when things don’t make sense, time to go back over things that were missed or taught too quickly, and the chance to look ahead at topics that may be coming up 🌿

For some students, looking ahead gives them the opportunity to push themselves to a higher level. For others, it gives them a longer period of time to understand the topic before they meet it at school.

These photos show a couple of our recent sessions. There may be written or exam-style questions to complete, but we also use practical activities, demonstrations, diagrams and discussion where these will help make an idea clearer.

These photos were all taken during the same session this morning 💚

At the same time, one child was working at the whiteboard, another was writing and others were using different practical activities and resources.

Sharing a room doesn’t mean that every learner has to complete the same task or work in the same way. Each child can be working towards something relevant to them, with the resources, level of interaction and support adjusted as needed.

They can still learn alongside other children, talk and work together where it is helpful, while having the freedom to change position, move between activities or take a pause.

This is what a Rowan Tree Learning & MagiKats Maldon session can look like: several different kinds of learning happening together in one shared space.

Before we choose the work for a session, we always consider the unique learner who will be doing it 💚

What are they able to access at the moment? Is there an interest or familiar topic that could help them engage? What does this particular session need to achieve?

Sometimes the priority is developing a specific skill. At other times, it may be helping a young person return to an activity they previously found difficult, work with less support or simply experience learning as something manageable and fun.

The answers to these questions affect the resources we choose, how much work we prepare and how we introduce it. They may also change from one session to the next, because what a learner can manage on one day may not be the same on another.

The planning happens before the resource is selected, but it continues throughout the session as we respond to what we see.

Every student learns differently, and the approach we take reflects that. We keep our groups small, our explanations clear, and our pace steady, so that students have the time to feel like they're properly understanding what they’re doing rather than just rushing through it 💚

Some need to revisit the basics, some need things broken down in a different way that makes sense to them, and others simply need a calmer space where they feel comfortable asking questions. We always make sure that our sessions are built around this premise of patient teaching, structured support, and an environment where students can think, try, and learn without pressure 🌱

Progress is not always a steady move forwards 🧡

A young person may engage well one week and find the next much harder. They might manage a full activity one day but need to return to something familiar the next. Sometimes they may need more support again with something they seemed ready to do independently.

That doesn’t mean the progress has disappeared.

Confidence, engagement and readiness to learn can all be affected by what else is happening in their life. A difficult day doesn’t take away the moments when they asked for help, attempted something new, stayed a little longer or returned after finding learning difficult.

At Rowan Tree Learning, we look at progress over time rather than judging it by one session. We're always able to adjust the support that's needed and revisit skills without making it feel like failure, as well as recognising the smaller changes that over time make learning more manageable.

Progress can include pauses, difficult days and steps backwards, but what matters is that the young person continues to feel supported as they find a rhythm that works for them.

What happens when you contact Rowan Tree Learning? 💚

Our first meeting is simply a chance to understand the young person and their current situation. There is no expectation that families or professionals will already know exactly what type of support is needed.

We may talk about:

• what learning currently looks like for the young person
• what they enjoy and where their strengths lie
• what they are finding difficult or overwhelming
• any support or provision already in place
• what the family, school or professional hopes will change

We’ll then explain the different ways we may be able to help and consider what could provide a realistic, manageable starting point. This might be individual tuition, a small group, project-based learning or a more flexible form of independent learning.

If Rowan Tree Learning seems suitable, we can discuss practical details and possible next steps. If it doesn’t, we will be honest about that too and sign post you to other provisions that we feel may be more suitable.

The aim of the first conversation is to begin building a clearer picture together and find a way forward that works for the young person.

It’s not often that we have spaces available in an online GCSE Science group, but we’re opening a new weekly session on Sundays at 1.30pm, starting 13th September 🧡

Each 40-minute session will give students structured support with the topics they find difficult, helping them strengthen their understanding and grow in confidence as they work towards their exams.

The sessions cost £80 per month, with just four remaining places available.
