Newest Spence beekeeper-our 2y.o granddaughter- when ask if she liked beekeeping- "it was fun- they buzzed a lot"

Well I hope you'll all forgive our tardiness and not posting onto this page throughout the summer, but like all of you life has been particularly hectic, in all the years we have kept bees, this has been the hardest yet, so all you new bee keeper out there don't be put off bee-keeping.

This summer was all about keeping the bees alive, with the weather so poor all we seemed to do was feed feed and feed, but we are now reaping the benefits, strong healthy colonies going into the winter. At this time of year we re queen our colonies that have older Queens ready for next spring.

We are now starting winter preparation, varroa treatment in, we are using Apistan, we find it works well, and is an inexpensive way of treating at £4.50 a hive, supers are all removed now as the frosty nights have put paid to any further heather honey and we allow the bees to keep any ivy honey they source for themselves.

For the new beekeepers out there- as a rule- we only take colonies with 7 or more seams of bees through the winter (seam of bees is-the gap between the frames should be full of bees- when you open up count before you disturb the bees) if you have less that this amalgamate with another colony- you are better taking one strong colony through the winter and having live bees in the spring-than being tempted to try and take 2 through with only 6 seams of bees and having no bees in the spring. If you have only one colony and it is still less than 7 seams give us a phone and we can advise you how to proceed.

We have liquid feed, fondant and varroa treatment in stock.
