First in my class at university, I graduated with a degree in English literature and a degree in theatre. I have trained in the editorial field in children's publishing in Manhattan, NY. I most recently worked as an editorial specialist for a global medical devices company, where I had responsibility for delivering accurate, concise and compliant package labelling that met the quality standards of

Exams have begun which means it is time for my annual reminder that neither your performance on exams nor the results you receive determine your quality or your worth as a person.

Exams are antiquated, poorly designed, and highly inaccurate measures of how well someone takes a test, not how well they understand a topic nor how well they will do in their life. They are superficial in their approach, reviewing only a limited set of information within a limited experience and environment. They are not YOU.

To paraphrase Walt Whitman: You contain multitudes. You are full of infinite possibilities and exams can’t even scratch the surface on what is in you and what you will become. Only you can determine and demonstrate who you are, and you have a lifetime to do it. What you do with a piece of paper and a pencil in an exam room on one morning of one day can’t come close to capturing your being. Exams are a blip in your existence, NOT a causality.

You are amazing. You are worthy. You are full of possibility. Always remember that.

It’s results day, which means it’s time for my semi-annual reminder that your exam results do NOT reflect your worthiness as a person.

English exams are almost here, and so it is time for my annual statement on what that means:

The exams that are being set for you, our young people, are not measures of your worth, your capability, or your potential for success and happiness. They aren't very good measures of anything at all except for your ability to take a test.

Learning isn't about taking exams or exam results. Learning is about having your understanding of the world widened and deepened. No standardised exam on this planet is capable of measuring that.

So whatever happens on Tuesday or Wednesday this coming week, please remember that your journey through life is not resting on whether or not you get all the marks for commonality or if you can correctly identify a metaphor in an op-ed. English is meant to show you how language can be used by you to express yourself fully, to be understood as you want to be understood. If you take that forward, you've already succeeded.
