Guidance for the coming Muirburn season

A new licence for muirburn is being introduced in Scotland after the Scottish Parliament passed a law to regulate the practice in 2024.

The aim of the licence is to help ensure that muirburn is carried out safely and appropriately.

We expect that licences will be required from 15 September 2026 and we’ve published guidance on our website to help guide people through the process.

A devastating wildfire took place yesterday in the Pentlands outside Edinburgh.
This is a stark reminder how devastating wildfires can be at this time of the year.
A huge thanks to all of the gamekeepers land managers and SFRS for bringing this fire under control so quickly.

Details of the Wildfire 🔥which took place just outside of Edinburgh in the Pentland hills yesterday (Not Arthur’s Seat).
Another environmental disaster which needs to be addressed by government policy.

I will publish photographs and details when I have permission.
A big well done to everyone involved, especially all the gamekeepers and land managers.

A huge thank you to Bright Spark Burning Techniques for sponsoring the 5th tee at this year’s Strathmore Rugby Golf Day.

Bright Spark kindly sponsored a hole at last year’s event as well, so it’s brilliant to have them back supporting the Golf Day and Strathmore Rugby Club once again.

Founded by Calum Kippen and Iain Hepburn, Bright Spark are leading experts in controlled burning and muirburn, providing specialist training, consultancy and expert advice to landowners, land managers and rural businesses across Scotland.

Their work plays an important role in wildfire prevention, conservation and responsible rural land management- helping those who manage Scotland’s hills, moorlands and countryside use fire safely and effectively as a working tool.

Bright Spark have also been making great progress through their Lantra Approved Muirburn Foundation Practitioner Training, with dozens of land managers already trained and accredited. Their work has been recognised across the rural sector, with ongoing training, roadshows and engagement helping to set the standard for safe and responsible muirburn practice in Scotland.

With strong links to Scotland’s rural, sporting and gamekeeping communities, Bright Spark are a brilliant fit for Strathmore Rugby Club, and we’re delighted to have them involved again this year.

A massive thank you again to Bright Spark Burning Techniques for their continued support of the event. 👏🔥
