PARIS IS BANNING CARS FROM 1,000 STREETS AND PROMISING BEAUTY FOR ALL 🌿

Paris's new mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has just laid out the most ambitious pedestrian plan in the city's modern history.

He's pledging to turn 1,000 of Paris's 6,500 streets car-free by the end of his term - and fix 1,000 neglected "blackspots" across every neighbourhood.

His mandate: pedestrians are the "absolute priority." He's also creating a dedicated police unit to crack down on motorist violence against walkers and cyclists.

The plan goes beyond traffic. Grégoire is calling it a "right to beauty" - meaning facades, bridges, old street furniture, and daily public spaces get restored across the entire city, not only the tourist zones.

Already 53% of all trips inside Paris happen on foot. Cars account for only 4.3%.

He also wants to turn the périphérique - the ring road that circles the city - into a green urban boulevard by 2032, reserved for buses and carpooling.
