Delighted to share the 12 films made by Anim8s with the people of Cowdenbeath as part of the 'Stories from Cowdenbeath' project. A special thanks to Fife Council for funding the project and to Cowdenbeath Community Council, Cowdenbeath Civic Week and all the local people who helped to make the films so rich and powerful. In celebration of the commencement of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024, here's a reminder of the Austerity Bites: Children's Voices project we carried out in collaboration with Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland in 8 European principalities in 2014.

The project involved 32 young people in the creation of short films about the impacts of austerity on the lives of young people in Glasgow, Preston, Ghent, Brussels, Marseille, Rome, Athens and The Hague. All in the context of the UNCRC.

Our followers may have noticed a lack of activity on our site of late. This is due to Martin's involvement as Associate Artist with Anim8s, a charity dedicated to providing exciting experiences in digital media to groups and individuals in Fife and beyond. Anim8s has gone from strength to strength in recent months and you can learn more about it at www.anim8s.com where you can follow links to our social media. Pleased to see some of the photos from a pre-Covid project at Banff Academy appear on the cover (and inside) of the Teaching English magazine. We worked with a group of pupils to create a range of portraits themed around local words and language. Thanks once again to Jamie Fairbairn and Claire Needler for making this possible.

Another project from Anim8s. This one's an interpretation of the poem 'This Is It' by William Letford created by young people from Dunfermline High School. A huge thanks to the boys, Laura Barbour from the English Department, Matthew F**t at Scots Hoose and Billy Letford. The project was supported by Anim8s Associate Artists Andrew Low and Martin Ayres. This is a BSL/Visual Vernacular interpretation of the updated version of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem 'From a Railway Carriage' during a recent Anim8s project. The poem was created in collaboration with children from North Queensferry Primary School and St Margaret's RC Primary in South Queensferry. The poem was interpreted and performed by actor Craig McCulloch. We hope you like his work as much as we do! Thanks to Craig and also to Solar Bear for their help and support.

We've been working again with Anim8s recently and are delighted to present the final version of 'From a Railway Carriage', an animated film created by children from North Queensferry Primary School and St Margaret's RC Primary in South Queensferry, the two films closest to each end of the iconic Forth Bridge. The film is the children's interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem 'From a Railway Carriage' from 'A Child's Garden of Verses'. They were asked to imagine how Stevenson would respond to the view from a 21st Century train on the Fife Circle Line. You can read more about Anim8s at https://www.anim8s.com

Here's a link to the Power Up, Power Down videos. The films were narrated by Tam Dean Burn and the original illustrations were by Claire Hubbard at emseeicth. The films were created by Me and Glenda Rome with music from Michael Begg. An interesting and important project.

Delighted to hear that the work done by Scottish children and workers from projects including Glasgow Women's Aid, East Dunbartonshire and Shakti who contributed to the Power Up, Power Down projects rewarded by a meeting with the First Minister. Caged Beastie were involved in the creation of the resource pack and the films that were created to highlight issues around court ordered parental contact, domestic abuse and the voice of the child. It was a pleasure to be involved in this genuinely important project. I'll post a link to the films shortly.
