You won't have to drive (or cycle) very far on country lanes to witness poor overtaking. Unfortunately it is the cyclist who normally comes off worse.

Another big problem is where motorists ignore the law when it comes to solid white lines in the centre of the road.

The Highway Code says :

Rule 129

Double white lines where the line nearer to you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

Did you know that Motorways are statistically our safest roads?

Fancy practicing on a motorway before you pass your test?

Well for the last 5years it has been possible (provided that you are with a fully qualified Driving Instructor in a dual control car). Apparently 57% of drivers aren't aware of this. Check out below for more statistics about motorways.

The survey also shows a lack of awareness of a law change made five years ago allowing learner drivers onto motorways under certain conditions.

Want to pass your Practical Driving test on the first attempt?

Failure to observe properly at junctions is consistently the number one reason why most people don't.

Knowing the reasons why people fail might help you target your practice outside of lessons with your Instructor.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) website shows you the top ten reasons to fail.

The link shown here talks about footwear when driving. I agree that flip-flops are probably the not the best footwear to drive in but I doubt very much that the police would charge you for anything, if you were driving in flip-flops, provided you were driving to a reasonable standard.
However, if you were to demonstrate poor control then a change of 'driving without due care or attention' might be warranted (or a more serious charge in the event that someone is killed or seriously injured).

Driving in flip flops could break the Highway Code and see you fined £1,000

You may have heard that he Highway Code has just been amended.

These amendments are unlikely to be seen on any theory app that you may be using at the moment. The DVSA haven't said how soon they will appear on the Theory Driving Test but even if you have passed the test you need to know what they are.

Stay up-to-date and check out the rules here.

Rules for all types of road users have been updated in The Highway Code to improve the safety of people walking, cycling and riding horses.

The DVSA have published the top ten reasons for test failure and as usual the number one reason is for poor observations at junctions.

This also happens to be the top reason for road collisions.

You can look at the other main reasons for test failure here.

Although there has been no official confirmation that driving lessons can restart on 12/04/21 the DVSA has notified Driving Instructors that testing will recommence testing (subject to success in the first stages of the easing of the lockdown) on that date.

As such most Instructors are working on the basis that it will be possible for lessons to start on the same date.

So, should you start looking for an Instructor now or wait until then?

The majority of instructors will have a full diary (filled with their students, from before the lockdown, that will be moved to the weeks/months after the restrictions are relaxed). These students will be at various stages of their training. Some might have only had a few hours some will be 'test ready'.

You are likely to have to join a waiting list but it is better to do that rather than hope to find an Instructor a bit further down the line. It could take some time for everyone to catch up and you could find that you will end up waiting months, rather than weeks, if you don't act now.

If you can't find an instructor by recommendation a good place to start is the Driving Instructors Association website.

Driving lessons in England. Latest advice.

The Government has announced that during these dates, driving lessons should not take place in England.

Learners can still have private practice using their own car as long as they and the supervising driver are from the same household and it is travel for work, education or for other legally permitted exemptions.

What this means for driving tests

Further to the announcement from the Government, all driving tests in England will be suspended from Thursday 5 November and restart on 3 December.
